? Introduction ? The Social Capital Academy (SCA) is a short-term, high-impact program that bridges the opportunity gap and opens career doors for first-generation and underrepresented college students. SCA relies on dedicated volunteers (Career Mentors/Career Experts) and actively involves junior-level college students as they embark on their career journeys. Our main goal is to support our students by providing them with the skills, confidence, and real-time social networks necessary to secure internships and full-time positions with leading companies. We believe this truly levels the playing field and empowers our students to become successful professionals and role models in their communities. ?? How does it work? ?? SCA is a virtual four-module not-for-credit program that links junior year college students to active professionals in their fields of interest. It is a virtual ecosystem made up of students, professional mentors, instructors, and program resources! ?? How do we know it works? ?? Students who have participated in SCA have formed meaningful bonds with mentors, sharpened their goals, and achieved internships and scholarships. Our IRB-approved longitudinal survey study demonstrates significant improvements in career decision-making, mentoring, job seeking behavior, and networking self-efficacy. ??     Did you know: the single greatest predictor of social mobility is being acquainted with someone who is professionally successful? You don’t even have to know them well - loose ties are enough to make all the difference. ? YOU could be that difference for a college student. The Social Capital Academy (SCA) connects junior-year college students with a team of mentors and successful business professionals who give one hour a week for six weeks to help each participating student reimagine and prepare for the working world ahead. Many of SCA's students are from underrepresented and first-generation backgrounds, often holding down jobs at the same time they are pursuing their degrees. SCA mentors, like you, offer valuable guidance and direction that may not otherwise be available to students through traditional academic channels. If you are looking for a simple way to make an immediate difference in economic equity and help out a hard-working student, check out SCA. (Note: I learned about SCA through the great work of one of it's founders, David Obstfeld at Cal State Fullerton, College of Business and Economics.)
