An aperture for socially responsible artisans. At Social Art and Culture, we believe Creativity is an economy.

关于我们

At Social Art and Culture, we believe Creativity is an economy. Founded in 2009 as a 5013c, we proudly reside in Southeast Washington, DC's Historic Anacostia Arts and Culture District. Using the power of the arts to educate and advance marginalized and underserved communities, we strive to lead the new narrative around how we invest in the creative economy—a new economically sustainable framework that invests in artisans and its culture. This framework continues to build our aperture for socially responsible artisans, where we collaboratively showcase their works' impact through exhibition, media arts, and curated experiences.

Nellie Bly(1864-1922) Born Elizabeth Jane Cochran on May 5th 1864 in Cochran’s Mill, Pennsylvania, Nellie Bly was an American journalist and pioneer of investigative journalism. She rose to fame following the publication of her series piece titled “Ten Days in a Mad-House”. In 1887, Bly adopted the pseudonym Nellie Bly to go undercover as a patient at a New York City asylum to expose the poor conditions the patients were experiencing. Her report led to improvements in the treatment of patients within the mental healthcare system. Bly’s work inspired other female journalists known as “Stunt girls” to report on social injustices. Throughout her career Bly constantly advocated for women’s rights and gave a much needed voice to working women. The brave and innovative career of Nellie Bly opened doors for many women today within the work environment.?#Womenshistorymonth

I design wholistic socially engaged art experiences that nurture community, honor memory, build networks, facilitate collective problem-solving, and create space for radical listening.

As a part of my art practice and corporate wellness offerings, I have had the wonderful opportunity to present meditations for a few businesses and government agencies lately. What I have learned is that we all need a moment to pause. A lot of people are making fast changes and need just 15 - 20 minutes to slow down. I was going to write a longer post but, right now...I think it's best to just offer a free meditation for anyone who needs it. Please join me and PAUSE for a Midday Meditation Wednesday, February 26 at noon on zoom. Come as you are, join us on your headphones, at your desk, from your call, before lunch, during lunch, on screen or off - all are welcome. Room opens at Meditation starts promptly at 12:05pm and last for 12-15 mins. Room opens again at 12:20 for a Meditation for Now community class and discussion. Register for link and call in number.
