Disability in Health Care Education -? The Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education & Ohio Disability and Health Program developed a resource detailing standards on social, environmental, and physical aspects of disability to inform future health professionals on how to provide effective, interprofessional team-based health care. All health professionals and their patients would benefit greatly from an education that will adequately integrate these competencies, which include 1. Contextual and Conceptual Frameworks on Disability, 2. Professionalism and Patient-Centered Care, 3. Legal Obligations and Responsibilities for Caring for Patients with Disabilities, 4. Teams and Systems-based Practice, 5. Clinical Assessment, and 6. Clinical Care over the Lifespan and during Transitions Learn more about disability in health professions education: https://lnkd.in/ebTjW-ZM This resource was created by?The Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education partnered with the Ohio Disability and Health Program at the Ohio State University Nisonger Center. Transforming health professions education to create a more just and equitable health care system for all.
关于我们
Social mission is a national movement, focused on health equity and training health professionals as agents of more equitable health care. This takes us beyond centuries-old conventions in health professions education to train providers prepared to build a system that is not only better, but fairer. Our movement started with a 2012 conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that brought national attention to medical schools with strong social mission commitment, created a forum for collaboration and shared innovations, and legitimized the important role of medical education in addressing social inequities. We are now Social Mission Alliance. Vision Health professions education in which social mission is present, prominent, and valued to drive health equity and improved health for individuals, communities, and nations. Mission Social Mission Alliance aims to promote social mission in health professions education by networking learners, teachers, community leaders, health policy makers and their organizations to advance equity in education, research, service, policy, and practice. What is social mission? The social mission of a health professions school is the contribution of the school in its mission, programs, and the performance of its graduates, faculty and leadership in advancing health equity and addressing the health disparities of the society in which it exists.

Meet Bruny Kenou. She didn't ask permission to fix mental health care. She just did it. In 2018, she was battling depression at Duke University and felt lucky to find her perfect therapist: ? A Black woman who understood her? ? Someone who made her feel seen? ? A provider who "got" her cultural context But mental health shouldn't depend on luck. So this Togo-born student took action:? ? Created DukeLine, a 24/7 peer text support system? ? Designed it with cultural competency at its core? ? Built something that now serves thousands The results? Research shows students actively use it.? They get real benefit from the text-based help.? Even the peer coaches report positive outcomes. But Bruny wasn't finished. After graduation, she:? ? Became an NIH research fellow? ? Identified social determinants gaps? ? Built Lay Mental Health Advocates (LMHA) Her program trains community? members to help others navigate? the complex mental health system. The impact?? ? Over 500 advocates trained by 2023? ? Thousands helped to access care? ? Communities rebuilding trust with providers How committed was she?? She braided hair around? Washington DC to fund her vision. Now a 3rd-year medical student, Bruny?has already touched more lives than? many psychiatrists will in their careers. This is what transformative leadership looks like. Not waiting for systems to change.? Building the solution yourself. ===================== ?? Who's the Bruny Kenou in your community?? ?? Repost to celebrate grassroots mental health leaders.? ?? Indigenous knowledge should be integrated throughout medical education. A new resource is available for medical students and other allied health professionals to learn about Traditional Healing, the Indian Health Service, and Tribal Health Programs – including a facilitator guide and ready-made presentation slides. Developed by Hailey Baker, Alec Calac, PhD, and Dr. Daniel Calac, "An Introduction to Traditional Healing in American Indian and Alaska Native Communities" is now available in MedEdPORTAL. “We often see AI/AN health disparities presented to learners without context, leading audiences to believe that genetic or behavioral factors must be the root cause of AI/AN hardship…Rather than doing this, we challenge learners to explain how policies and systems have perpetuated AI/AN health disparities and how traditional healing practices and cultural connectedness can improve AI/AN health and wellness” Use this new resource and share it widely: https://lnkd.in/gQbdGb96 This resource is a product of a collaboration between the Association of Native American Medical Students and the Association of American Indian Physicians NBME, Building The Next Generation of Academic Physicians, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) This resource, and many more, are available in the Social Mission Resource Library at https://lnkd.in/emTHSnjT #IndigenousHealth

Meharry Medical College has pioneered research addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities. The institution’s commitment to health equity is demonstrated through its network of specialized research centers and institutes, each targeting different aspects of healthcare inequality. These include the Meharry School of Global Health, Global Health Equity Institute, Maternal Health Equity Research Center, and the Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health. In an effort to catalog examples of social mission in practice, Meharry Medical College has been added to our collection of social mission case studies. Thrilled to announce our new paper is out today in Health Affairs! ?? We found that while the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander population is well-represented overall in the healthcare workforce, significant underrepresentation exists for specific subgroups, including other Southeast Asian and NHPI populations. We also identified a critical underrepresentation of AANHPI individuals in the behavioral health workforce. Huge thanks to my incredible collaborators at the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity! Women of color are underrepresented in leadership positions of academic medicine and other health professions. How can people at the individual and institutional level bring about change? The Women Faculty of Color Toolkits are presentations designed to provide practical information on issues, practices, and data that impact women faculty of color. These presentations provide an overview, relevant best practices, tips, and useful references. There are separate presentations for individual and institutional activities.
