Most participants are either working on drug development or are still doing their PhD! ?? To get a finer grain detail of participants affiliation, we happily clustered each participants according to their job title and company name (based on the sentence embedding from a light weighted language model). From this plot we can see each of you will meet some new friends with similar jobs and interests! Of course, this clustering could have been improved if we had the capacity to scrape more information and finetune the model, but that would be too creepy and perhaps costly. ?? Did you know that it has been 8 years since the first annual SoCal TBA Symposium? This Saturday, our community will convene at UCLA for our Annual Symposium again! This photo is from 2018, our 2nd symposium, From Bench to Business, Coast to Coast, also held at UCLA, just like this year. It's been six years in a flash! Tell us in the comments—where were you and what were you up to in 2018? Back then, I (the community wizard) was still in Taiwan, debating whether to pursue a PhD and wondering what path to take. Interestingly, that year’s symposium also featured a session on "Trends of AI and Big Data in Biotech." Just six years ago, AI looked very different! Transformers—the technology that underpins ChatGPT—had only been invented a year before, and while machine learning was starting to gain attention in the biotech world, it was nowhere near as discussed as it is today. In biology, models were still small and just beginning to evolve. Fast forward to today, the training paradigm has completely shifted, and also increasingly expensive—it's not something you can afford to do casually anymore! Topic 3: Competitive Advantages and Innovative Service Models of Taiwan’s Pharmaceutical CDMOs In 2023, the global output value of biotech and pharmaceuticals reached approximately US$1.5 trillion. The industry is expected to grow to US$2.8 trillion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate as high as 6.15%. According to statistics from the Industrial Development Administration, MOEA, Taiwan's investment in biotech reached US$1.713 billion in 2022. Of this amount, US$945 million was invested in the pharmaceutical sub-sector, with US$756 million allocated to new drug development; this indicates that almost 80% of the investment was dedicated to research and development of new drugs. Amidst the rapid development, Taiwan's contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) have excelled. Major companies have successfully exported CDMO services globally. With the government's investment through the National Development Fund and the implementation of relevant laws and regulations, there is potential to emulate the semiconductor industry's success and establish a thriving CDMO industry cluster. Compared to competitors like Japan and South Korea, Taiwan's CDMO industry has established advantages in advanced manufacturing technologies, high-quality mass production, and economies of scale through the industry's experiences in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Taiwan also has top-tier medical institutions that can offer excellent clinical trials and verification services. Most of the processes required for drug launch can be completed in Taiwan. As a result, Taiwan is well-positioned to meet the international market's demand for innovative drugs and biologics in terms of innovation, efficiency, and clinical support. This event will delve into incorporating AI into production bases, developing new drugs using Taiwan's medical gene database, and licensing macromolecule drugs.
