The study. The hope. The limits. Most of you know I follow an intermittent fasting diet. I have for more than a decade. And my main reason for doing so: Studies – even then – showed that mice with Alzheimer’s showed a significant delay in the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms WHEN they followed a fasting diet. OK, I said at the time. As an Alzheimer’s daughter AND momma who maybe has some baby weight to lose, sign me up! Fast-forward that fasting-related research by 10+ years: I now have a *little more proof this may not be an altogether bizarre approach. A new study in Cell Metabolism (link below) says: “Here, we show that time-restricted feeding (TRF) without caloric restriction improved key disease components including behavioral timing, disease pathology, hippocampal transcription, and memory in two transgenic (TG) mouse models of AD.” Translation: By *fasting, we could be *slowing the progress of Alzheimer’s. There’s a lot more specific language in the study, but I trust not everyone has the desire to know EVERY detail like this daughter does… But before broadcasting this hope as the silver bullet we’ve been waiting for: A humble reminder of what my dear friend and world-renowned neurologist, Dr. Mike Rosenbloom, once told me about ALL dementia studies and the actual hope they represent. Dr. Mike really cautions us against seeing TOO much hope in research that's still in the "mice" stage; i.e., we still need to see that medical magic applied to humans. NONETHELESS… I’m taking this one as a win. Because though this study has its limits… there’s still the promise… of hope. Hugs on a Tuesday, my friends.?? #SoManyGoodbyes #Alzheimers #dementia #ENDALZ #Caregivers #AlzheimersResearch #dementiaResearch #IntermittentFastingDiets #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamiy #AlzheimersDaughter https://lnkd.in/g4fg7s-3

The brilliance of both mother and daughter. ? I’m so honored to share this conversation… the latest in our “Voices of Dementia” series on “Hello Alzheimer’s.” ? I promise you’ll find this mother-daughter duo as inspirational as I did. ? Thank you for sharing your light, laughter and wisdom, Shirley and Jenn. Love to both of you. ? The full episode description below… Again, please find “Hello Alzheimer’s” wherever you get your podcasts. ?? ? ***** Hello Alzheimer’s host Karla Hult shares the beautiful bond between a mother and daughter, Shirley Heine Rowe Freckmann and Jenn Rowe Glass. And these two women are quite the dynamic duo: After graduating from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Shirley began a “life of service to others.” She advocated for and taught others, while also managing to raise three children. For her part, Jenn has had a successful career in corporate communications, while raising a family of her own. ? But despite their academic, professional and personal accomplishments, both Shirley and Jenn may be facing their greatest challenge yet: Shirley was diagnosed with Lewy body and Vascular dementia in 2021.? ? In a touching conversation, mom and daughter discuss Shirley’s current reality and devotion to each other. And Jenn delivers her own insights and gratitude for her village, including a brother and sister who continue to champion for their mother’s care. ? This is the second conversation in an occasional series, Voices of Dementia. As the title suggests, we’ll be highlighting the courageous voices of people touched by Alzheimer’s or other dementia, so that we can all listen to and learn from each other. With each conversation, please remember... You are not alone. ? Gene. Bruce. Tony. We feel like we knew them. These stars of the screen and stage. And so their diagnoses hit differently. It’s jarring when these larger-than-life celebrities also walk the path of Alzheimer’s or other dementia. It brings it home, perhaps, for those who thought they didn’t have that connection. But I promise we all know someone on this journey. I promise there’s a reason to learn more about how to support ALL the families touched by Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Please let your hearts, not the headlines, inspire you to take action. (Though the families of Gene, Bruce and Tony would also appreciate that action). Because for every Gene, Bruce and Tony… There’s also a Bob, Bill and Mary Jean. Every family needs the support of its village, whether in Hollywood, New York or St. Paul’s East Side. We’re in this fight together, my friends. And none of us is alone. Sending all the love and prayers to the families of Gene Hackman and Tony Bennett, as they grieve. And sending so much strength to the Willis family, as they continue to lovingly care for Bruce. #SoManyGoodbyes #Alzheimers #dementia #Caregivers #AlzheimersSupport #dementiaSupport #CaregiversSupport #ENDALZ #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamily #AlzheimersDaughter

Happy International Women’s Day, my friends! Loved celebrating this day by connecting with and uplifting some amazing women in our community. Kudos to ALL those involved in planning: “The RSP Spring Experience: International women’s Day 2025 in Minneapolis, powered by Ready Set Pivot and Let’s Talk Women!” I was honored to support the day’s caregiving theme… I always welcome the opportunity to remind ALL of us of the abundant resources and support available for all caregivers, especially those caring for loved ones on the Alzheimer’s and other dementia journey. Women, we deserve more than a day… I know… But here’s to each and every one of you: I see you, respect you and celebrate you! Happy Day, indeed. ???? P.S. Yes, the gold boots was definitely a conversation starter. And yes, I continued my car selfie tradition… Though I was grateful to capture at least a couple photos with others. ?? Ready. Set. “He would’ve told me, ‘Get back to my grandbabies. I’m ok.’” – Me ? I often say those words when sharing with parents who are also caring for their own parents.? The Sandwich Generation.? Bookended by Babies and Dementia.? Whatever the name, this group of people is growing. ? Just today… I had a conversation (you’ll hear that conversation VERY soon!), that emphasized the need for all of us to strike a balance.? ? In other words: ? Yes. If you’re an adult child of someone living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia, chances are you want to – or at least feel obligated to – be there for your loved one. Of course, in most cases, it will be a priority for you. ? But also… ? Yes. If you also have children who need your time, your love, YOU… then please remember (better than I did), that your loved one would want you to, “Get back to my grandbabies.”? ? It’s ok, my friends, to take time for other loved ones… to even take time for you.? ? More on this topic later this week… For now and always, please know you’re not alone. ?? ? #SoManyGoodbyes #Alzheimers #dementia #Caregivers #ENDALZ #AlzheimersSupport #dementiaSupport #CaregiverSupport #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamily #AlzheimersDaughter #AlzheimersPodcast #dementiaPodcast
