The ADA is celebrating a huge win for dentistry! Seven states have enacted the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact into law, which means the compact will officially become active. The Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact will allow licensed dentists and dental hygienists to practice in any other participating state. And dentists are relocating: One in seven dentists with less than 10 years of experience changed states during the 2019-2022 period. This compact will reduce barriers to multistate practice and license portability and ensure a continuum of care for patients across state lines. The creation of the licensure compact was truly a collaborative effort. The ADA worked alongside the American Dental Hygienists' Association, The Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO), American Dental Education Association (ADEA), American Association of Dental Administrators, American Student Dental Association and the United States Department of Defense. State dental societies also were directly involved in enacting these laws.
