SCARY! ?? 64% of senior IT leaders can’t implement emerging tech due to talent gaps, yet qualified candidates struggle to find jobs. This paradox in tech hiring, highlighted in new research published in *MIS Quarterly Executive* (September 2024) by Woolridge, Johnson, Mohit, and Hassler, shows something is clearly broken. ??? Analyzing over 15,000 job postings, the researchers uncovered critical issues: 1. The Job Description Crisis ?? ??- 60% of "entry-level" software jobs demand 3+ years of experience ??- 88% of employers admit that AI filters screen out qualified candidates ??- Overly detailed job postings often deter applicants by creating confusion 2. The Root Cause ?? ??- No standard language to describe IT occupations ??- Over-specified technical requirements limit candidate pools ??- Broad hiring criteria can paradoxically narrow the talent pool 3. The Research Solution: ITOcc List ?? ??- A standardized list of 41 core IT occupations, based on job posting analysis ??- Provides a common language for employers and candidates, covering 89% of the IT labor market 4. Practical Impact ?? ??- Helps companies focus on essential qualifications rather than exhaustive wish lists ??- Enables job seekers to identify relevant roles quickly, streamlining the hiring process A crucial insight from the research: “Overly detailed and technical descriptions for IT positions, together with inconsistent occupation identifiers, cause companies to pass on qualified candidates who do not match every requirement, while job seekers fail to identify roles matching their skill sets.” ?? The ITOcc List could greatly impact tech hiring by providing a shared framework, bridging the gap between talent and opportunity. However, as the authors note, the list will need to evolve with the industry, especially with new AI roles. ?? Interestingly, “Blockchain Engineer” is on the standardized list despite few job postings, while other new AI roles like "AI Engineer," "AI Specialist," or "Prompt Engineer" aren’t separately classified. This raises key questions: - Are AI roles being absorbed into traditional IT categories like Software Developer or Computer Research Scientist? ?????? - Could AI roles be viewed as non-IT, perhaps part of data science or specialized domains? ?? - Might the 11% of the IT labor market not covered by the ITOcc framework be exactly where these high-demand roles like AI and prompt engineering fit in? ? For HR leaders and tech professionals, the ITOcc List offers a chance to transform hiring by focusing on essential skills over exhaustive requirements.
