“I’ve always felt a deep connection to my German heritage, but I never truly realized how strong that bond was until my recent trip to Germany. Growing up, my family always kept our German roots alive. We would share stories of my great-great-grandfather making his journey to America and how my other great-great-grandfather worked as a steeple builder in Germany. We would often serve traditional German dishes of sausage and sauerkraut and that was pretty normal for us. My husband and I share German heritage, and we’ve always gravitated toward experiences that celebrate our cultural background. One of our favorite German traditions is Oktoberfest. In 2021, we started hosting our own Oktoberfest celebration, complete with traditional German food, attire, and, of course, plenty of Oktoberfest beers. What began as a fun way to embrace our heritage soon became a cherished annual tradition. After a few years of hosting, we wondered if it was finally time to take a trip to Munich to experience the authentic Oktoberfest for ourselves. This past September, we finally traveled to Germany to experience the festival firsthand. The celebration was truly unforgettable. Being in Munich, surrounded by the rich history and the vibrant energy of the celebration, was an eye-opening experience for me. It was as if all the stories and traditions I’d grown up with came alive in a way I hadn’t expected and allowed me to see how much my heritage has shaped the person I am today. Oktoberfest has a whole new, special meaning to us now, and we look forward to celebrating it every year. To all those who celebrate, Prost! ??" Nichole VonderHaar is a Senior Project Manager with S.
