Smuin's spring dance series received a mention in the SF Chronicle's March 6th Spring Arts Preview - Mark your calendar. Smuin Contemporary Ballet Riding a new high of bold dancing,?the Potrero Hill-based company?is working on a premiere by artistic director Amy Seiwert, her 13th ballet for the company, set to lyrical music by British composer Oliver Davis. A company premiere by Trey McIntyre, “Wild Sweet Love,” taps a rowdier soundtrack by Queen, the Zombies, and other pop artists. The program also includes founder Michael Smuin’s 1969 pas de deux “The Eternal Idol” and?Rex Wheeler’s sweetly energetic “Sinfonietta.” April 25-May 4. $25-$89. Thank you, Rachel Howard, for including Smuin Ballet in your Best of 2024 for SF Bay Area dance in the SF Chronicle: Smuin Contemporary Ballet bid goodbye to its transformative artistic director of the past 17 years, Celia Fushille, and?welcomed a new leader: former company member and nationally noteworthy choreographer Amy Seiwert. The good news: Seiwert shares Fushille’s commitment to keeping founder Michael Smuin’s legacy alive while stretching the repertory to include cutting-edge work from an international roster of diverse choreographers. Even better news: Seiwert is a self-professed “true bunhead” who knows how to help dancers reach their highest potential. In the company’s September program of works by Jennifer Archibald and Matthew Neenan, longtime members like Maggie Carey and Cassidy Isaacson danced with new levels of passion and precision, while newcomers like Julia?Gundzik technically dazzled.
