Reflecting on an unforgettable day this past week at SMRT as we wrapped up our first annual Intern Summit! This event brought together our talented interns from various departments and locations to the Portland, Maine office to showcase the incredible work they have done over the summer with a presentation of their final project to our friends at Thomas College. The summit was jam-packed with engaging workshops and insightful learning sessions, designed to enrich our interns' experience and equip them with essential skills for their future endeavors. It was also a great opportunity for our interns to connect with SMRT leadership for a valuable discussion on career paths as they plan their professional futures. To wrap up this wonderful event, we embarked on a guided Trolly Tour where founder and storyteller extraordinaire, Paul Stevens, shed light on John Calvin Stevens' legacy and the historic projects that helped shape SMRT over the years. This summit is not just a celebration but a demonstration of our commitment to fostering growth, learning, and connection. ?? Amanda Huebner Photography

#DisabilityPrideMonth reminds us to recognize the beauty of our diverse experiences as we honor the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on this day in 1990. At a time when four in ten adults with disabilities experience unfair treatment in healthcare settings, at work, or when applying for public benefits (according to the Urban Institute), SMRT is committed to intentionally advocating and designing for a more inclusive world that incorporates ADA-compliant design features for individuals with disabilities to foster dignity and equality for all.

Bar Harbor Story provides a look at the conceptual design for the 42,600-square-foot expansion of Mount Desert Island Hospital, featuring contributions from our very own Derek J. Veilleux, AIA, EDAC, NCARB, and Philip Chaney. This project aims to combine more than a century of healthcare tradition with modern design and functionality to serve a community that experiences a surge of visitors during the summer months. The local emergency department's volume triples during this season, highlighting the critical need to effectively accommodate the increase. Together with MDI Hospital, we're dedicated to enhancing healthcare quality and experiences for the community, reinforcing our commitment to innovative and patient-centric design.?
Mount Desert Island Hospital is embarking on an exciting new chapter, building on its 125-year history with a major hospital expansion and renovation to bring it into the 21st century of care delivery. We truly value the trust Mount Desert Island Hospital has placed in the SMRT Architects & Engineers team to help realize their bold vision for community-focused, quality, patient-centered care on Mount Desert Island.
