We design, preserve, and advocate for affordable housing. It's our passion!
关于我们
SMR Architects is a 39-person, full-service architecture firm established in Seattle in 1977 as Stickney & Murphy Architects. Over our 44-year history, we have emerged as a leader in the fields of affordable housing, historic preservation, and sustainable design. Earlier this year, SMR acquired Tonkin Architecture and is in the process of fully integrating the Tonkin staff into our firm. We expect this acquisition to be complete by the end of 2021 and will result in expanded opportunities for our client and project partners as additional resources and expertise can be brought to each project. Over our 44-year history, SMR Architects has emerged as a leader in the field of affordable housing design in Washington State. For us, architecture is not just schematics and specifications; it is about the people who ultimately use and inhabit the buildings we design. At SMR, we create living spaces; our structures provide a place for life to happen as they enrich, anchor, and interact with the neighborhoods of which they are a part. Our team’s collaborative and creative approach to problem-solving, experience with neighborhood outreach and engagement, and sustainable philosophy help us serve both our clients and the community, always putting the interests of people first. Our staff and associates are engaged in the community and regularly volunteer for non-profit, historic, and service-based organizations. Our work is frequently recognized both locally and nationally for its exemplary contribution to affordable housing design. Most recently, Plaza Roberto Maestas was honored at the 2017 American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention with the AIA/HUD Secretary’s “Creating Community Connection” Award. Last fall, SMR Architects also was recognized with a Friend of Housing Award by the Washington State Housing Finance Commission for exceptional contributions to creating and supporting affordable housing in the state.

Wishing all our clients and project partners a happy holiday season! As we wrap up another year of designing affordable housing, we wanted to spread some holiday cheer by sharing a glimpse into our gingerbread house competition. Our team recently channeled their creativity to design some amazing edible masterpieces – two gingerbread villages and the Rainier Tower. Congratulations to Team 1 on their winning winter village creation! This year has shown us once again the remarkable impact we can have when we work together. We are proud to continue our mission of designing affordable housing developments that strengthen our communities, and we are grateful for the trust our clients and project partners place in us to bring these vital projects to life. To our clients, project partners, and everyone who has been part of our journey: thank you for another significant year of collaboration. Here's to continuing our meaningful work together in 2025!

Congrats to El Centro de la Raza, Walsh Construction Co., and the entire Four Amigos team on the successful completion of this project!
Our Walsh team has officially completed work at the vibrant Four Amigos Beloved Community in the heart of Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood. This six-story, U-shaped building will significantly benefit the south Seattle community by providing 87 affordable family-size homes, affordable bilingual childcare services provided by El Centro de la Raza, and a new 2,600 square-foot home for the Church of Hope. The building’s design embodies El Centro de la Raza's vision to address the needs of the families they support, featuring a central outdoor play area, efficient space utilization, and elements representing the Afro-Latinx community through vibrant colors, hand-painted tile murals, and sculptures. A huge shoutout to our great team of Sandi Tovias, Joe Geise, BJ Graham, Jesus Montiel, Anthony Sherman, and Wendy Kato for delivering this project safely and to the highest level of quality!
