SMNG A Ltd. and Farr Associates Architecture & Urban Design recently joined URBAN ReSOLVE in accepting the ULI Chicago Vision Award for Cultivate Collective - Phase One, featuring the Academy of Global Citizenship. Coming Soon! SMNG A Ltd. is nearing completion on an extensive renovation to Chicago Park District's Riis Park Fieldhouse. Located in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, this 1928 fieldhouse sits upon the 56-acre Riis Park site and was originally designed by Architect Walter Ahlschlager. The Fieldhouse was listed as a “contributing feature” to Riis Park’s status on the National Register for Historic Places in 1995. The renovation includes accessibility upgrades, new MEP systems, restored steel-sash windows with new high-efficiency glazing, reconfigured program spaces, new copper roof, expanded theatrical system and new finishes throughout. We look forward to this monumental project opening to the public very soon – including shared-use programming with the attached and newly completed CPS Belmont-Cragin Elementary School. People’s Choice Award at the 2024 AIA Chicago Designight celebration. We thank AGC for the vision and energy that made this project a reality and to everyone who voted for the project! As the summer comes to an end, we bid farewell to our incredible interns Julian and Joseph who are heading back to school. Their hard work, fresh perspectives, and enthusiasm have made a significant impact on our team. We will miss their energy and contributions, and we wish them all the best in their academic pursuits. Throwback Thursday to the AIA Chicago Tour of the Academy for Global Citizenship at the Cultivate Collective Campus.?The design team of SMNG A Ltd. (AOR), Farr Associates Architecture & Urban Design (Associate Architect), and dbHMS (EOR) gave a tour a new early childhood and K-8 charter school located Chicago’s southwest side. The group toured this state-of-art campus and learned about AGC's vision and program for the campus which incorporates health care services, an urban farm, a community market, and learning kitchens. Visitors discovered unique programmatic elements of the interior and exterior while the design team pointed out key requirements of the campus to meet the full petal certification for the Living Building Challenge. They also reviewed innovative sustainable design features incorporated into the design to meet net-positive energy and water. SMNG A Ltd. is proud to announce that the Academy for Global Citizenship at the Cultivate Collective Campus has been nominated as an Education Category FINALIST in AIA Chicago’s Lerch Bates People’s Choice Awards, presented in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Center! We need your help, VOTE here: https://bit.ly/3yG5k62 Built on the former site of the Chicago Housing Authority’s LeClaire Courts, the Academy for Global Citizenship (AGC) is a pre-K to 8 charter school which anchors Cultivate Collective's 6-acre campus. This innovative facility includes a Head Start center, outpatient health center, three-acre urban farm, on-site market, community hall, and teaching kitchens for nutrition education. The 71,000 sf learning laboratory holds the distinction of being the first and largest recipient of the Phius Zero 2021 Design Certification. AGC is also pursuing the Living Building Challenge, further promoting net-positive energy use and sustainability. Beyond AGC's mission, the school hub extends amenities to the community and planned mixed-income housing and retail development. AIA Chicago and SMNG A Ltd. invite you to join us for a tour of the Academy for Global Citizenship, the Midwest’s first K-12 PHIUS-certified and LBC designed school. The tour will take place on Thursday 8/1 from 5:30-7pm, free for AIA Members and AIA Student Members ($20 for non-members). It’s been a while, but it’s time for another SMNG A Ltd. employee profile! Today we’d like to introduce Mr. Julian Smith. Julian joined SMNG A Ltd. as an intern in June 2023, following his graduation from Heartland Community College with an associate’s degree in general arts. His professional journey has been diverse, encompassing various roles in retail and delivery services before finding his stride with SMNGA. Julian has been a tremendous asset to our organization, applying a natural dedication to quality and attention to detail to a variety of projects in different phases, learning many aspects of the profession along the way. Julian has many interests beyond his professional endeavors, including sports, music, and sketch artistry. He has a twin brother with whom he shares a deep interest in fashion, drawing inspiration from their shared experiences and mutual passion for creativity. These passions not only serve as creative outlets but also fuel his curiosity and drive for personal growth. Julian will be leaving us in August to continue his pursuit of a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Colorado Denver. With a blend of creativity, ambition, and a thirst for knowledge, Julian is poised to make an impact in the architecture world, leaving his mark through a unique blend of style and design. We have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever he pursues, and we’re going to miss him! We asked Julian a few questions to get to know him better, here's what he had to say: Favorite Chicago building? Why? "I don't know if I have a favorite but one that has caught my eye since I moved to Chicago in 2016 is St. Alphonsus church on Lincoln and Wellington." Is there one piece of architecture that you find especially inspiring. What is it and why? "Fallingwater, it's the house that caught my eye and made me want to dive deeper into architecture, which led me to figure out this is what I wanted to do with my life." Is there an architect that you find especially inspiring. Who is it and why? "Alexander Zhidkov, I admire all his work and I love his way of creating modern or futuristic looking buildings." What is your most memorable experience of a piece of Architecture? "This isn't a famous piece of architecture but when I was in elementary school, a family friend was having a custom house built in Las Vegas. I used to visit the house as it was being built so I saw some of the different phases it was in. It was an incredible house, very modern and extremely luxurious. I just remember running around this vast space clueless about what was really being built. The house ended up being sold to an owner of a sports team." What is the most important thing that one can do as an Architect now in 2024? in the next 10 years? "Now: keep your network open, don't burn any bridges and be nice to everyone. The next 10 years: understand sustainability."
