*Enrichment Programming* | Launch Your Career and Aim for the Stars! ??? Recently, interns and fellows from across the Smithsonian visited the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. There, we kicked off the day with a private planetarium show hosted by the museum’s astronomy educators. Following that, we embarked on an interactive scavenger hunt through the museum’s galleries. It was a fantastic way to engage with the exhibits and learn more about the history of aviation and space exploration. #Internship #Fellowship #Opportunities #NationalAirandSpaceMuseum #Smithsonian

In continued celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we highlight the research of Dr. Christine Garnier, a fellow in our Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program. ? "I asked about the meaning of the hogan and Joe-Chandler immediately placed it not in space but in time: it is the start of life—the place where one is born or a representation of the birthing process—as well as the end. It is not just a place that is made, but a place where one can always be in the state of making or becoming." --Christine Garnier, Ph.D.? ? Dr. Garnier, an appointee in the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program, wrote a Smithsonian Voices blog detailing Amelia Joe-Chandler’s Hogan Teapot and the significance of her artistry.?"Nestled in an archival box in the storage vaults of the National Museum of the American Indian, I encountered a small, copper sculpture that points to an entirely different sense of place. Hogan Teapot (2013) by Diné (Navajo) artist Amelia Joe-Chandler is a living homage to the idea of home—particularly her family’s home in Dinétah, the ancestral homelands of the Navajo Nation in the American Southwest. The brilliancy of the copper recalls the traditional form of the hogan, a dome-shaped structure with a log or stone framework that is traditionally covered with mud that hardens like rock. With a door outlined in silver on the side, the lid handle as a stove pipe, and a cast tree and two small sheep as the handle, Joe-Chandler’s sculpture changes the ubiquitous form of the teapot into a site of personal encounter through these allusions to her family’s home." ??In honor of Veterans Day, we're spotlighting the work of a Smithsonian research fellow and veteran Dr. Constance Spotts whose research bridges fashion and military history through timeless uniform designs. ?? “A woman soldier [sailor] deserves the best clothes this country can produce.” A belief held by American born couturier, Mainbocher in 1952 after successfully designing the uniforms for the WAVES and SPARS in World War II and the Women Marines. Dr. Constance R. Spotts, a recent graduate of Iowa State University in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design, is the 2024 post-doctoral Vining/Hacker Women’s Military History fellow. During her six-month residence, she enjoys searching the military and society collection of objects for original Mainbocher designs. His timeless uniforms that were still being worn sixty years later, only changed with fabric choice, tweaks in collar design and skirt length are very familiar to Dr. Spotts since she wore them during her 21-year naval career. This fact, however, was previously unknown to her until she had the opportunity to explore the collection. As a fashion student focusing on design and construction but also a retired naval officer, she views the uniforms through a unique lens. “Not only do I get to enjoy seeing couture techniques employed by a famous designer. But though associated records and labels, I get to learn about the wonderful women who paved a way for me.” #VeteransDay #Smithsonian #Researchfellowship #Opportunities

?? Happy Halloween! ?? ? Legendary monsters are spine-tingling but discovering that you’re wrestling with a giant transatlantic cable is a whole new level of dread…? ? Hayley Brazier, Ph.D., a Lemelson Center Travel to Collections Awardee, wrote a Smithsonian Voices blog for our office detailing the research she conducted at the National Museum of American History Archives. “It was the closest these deep-sea dreamers would ever come to touching the slime that dripped from a sea serpent’s scales. The cable was a less thrilling substitute, for sure, but anyone worth their salt would jump at the chance.” Read more about the spine-tingling cables in Hayley’s blog post! ?? https://lnkd.in/gVXRH-bj
