Can you spot the caterpillar? The cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) is a common pest of plants in the mustard (Brassicaceae) family. This family includes a wide range of fall vegetable crops, including the Brassica oleracea ‘Black Magic’ (kale) planted in the gardens at the National Museum of History and Culture. The cabbage white butterfly is not native to North America, but it can be found across the continent. The caterpillars are most visible during the day when they are actively feeding. When they are not feeding, the caterpillars retreat to the underside of leaves or to the veins to escape predators. Caterpillars are consumed by various predatory insects, spiders, and birds. These caterpillars can be controlled by covering the plants with a lightweight, row-cover cloth to prevent the butterflies from laying eggs on the leaves, or by removing the caterpillars by hand and giving them a good squish. By maintaining healthy plants, it helps to reduce the amount of leaf tissue the caterpillars need to consume to mature. ??: John S., Horticulturist #SmithsonianGardens #PublicGarden #Kale
