关于我们
As a vital and vibrant part of the Smithsonian experience, Smithsonian Gardens engages people with plants and gardens, informs on the roles both play in our cultural and natural worlds, and inspires appreciation and stewardship. Smithsonian Gardens extends the Smithsonian’s museum experience in a public garden setting with over 180 acres of outdoor gardens including 13 public exhibition gardens often called the Smithsonian institution’s “museum without walls.” Staff also produces interior exhibits and horticultural displays around the Smithsonian, develops educational programing, and manages artifact, archival, and living collections.

The bees are all a-buzz about Dahlia imperialis! ?? This is a cold hardy Dahlia that stands around 15 feet tall. Native to the Americas, this perennial tuber has bamboo-like foliage and large pale purple blossoms. It blooms in fall and is well-appreciated by late season pollinators. ??: Hannele L., Living Collections Photographer #SmithsonianGardens #Dahlia #PublicGarden

Horticulturist Justin showing off the blue vanda from our orchid collection. The blue vanda has a fragrant inflorescence that grows up to two feet long with several long lasting flowers that are white covered in a blue crosshatch. One of the most iconic fall flowers is the Chrysanthemum.?? But did you know that Chrysanthemums were first cultivated by the Chinese over 2000 years ago? Later, the Japanese began cultivating mums and it became the symbol of the imperial seal. Through centuries of cultivation, many types of Chrysanthemums have been developed. One such type is the specialty exhibition style Chrysanthemum. Within this type of mum there are 13 different classes. This year, Smithsonian Gardens grew mums from seven of those classes. These types of mums are not hardy and not the kinds typically found in garden centers. The process to grow the specialty exhibition mums took over six months until they were display worthy and were showcased in the Kogod Courtyard throughout the fall. Next time you see a mum, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the years of dedication it took to cultivate these flowers for our enjoyment. ??: Joe & Virginia, Horticulturist #Chrysanthemums #Horticulture #PublicGardens #SmithsonianGardens

There’s nothing like a wonderful fragrance to stop people in their tracks as they walk through our gardens. Currently, Osmanthus ‘Kaori Hime’ is in full bloom along the sidewalk in the Enid A. Haupt Garden. This diminutive tea olive is loaded with small fragrant flowers, making it an unexpected moment of joy in the garden this time of year. #SmithsonianGardens #Horticulture #PublicGardens
