This year, 16 college students and recent graduates joined us in Washington, D.C. for 12 weeks, and though their practicums have officially concluded, the semester-away experience was full of lectures, workshops, and behind-the-scenes tours too! The Latino Museum Studies Program Undergraduate Internship is a museum career pathway program designed to increase hands-on training opportunities for undergraduate students interested in art museum careers. The internship program focuses on non-curatorial museum roles including the areas of conservation, museum education, interpretation, digital culture, collections management, and exhibition design, fabrication and production. Arts education makes the world a more beautiful place. ?? Kids captured their world through their own lens in this photography workshop at the New Thing Arts and Architecture Center in Washington, D.C. From 1967 to 1973, the organization offered photography, creative writing, filmmaking, and music workshops to Black youth in the nation’s capital. Recognizing the need for more educational opportunities for Black children in the city, Howard University alum and architect Colin “Topper” Carew established the New Thing in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood. In addition to weekend and summer classes, the organization also hosted weekly concerts, which featured legendary performers, such as Stevie Wonder and B.B. King. Due to funding restraints, the New Thing closed its doors in 1973. But in just a few short years, the organization inspired countless young people to explore the arts and left a legacy of Black arts education and activism in the nation’s capital. The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is hiring multiple part-time contract museum educators to facilitate guided student tours for our current exhibition "A Bold and Beautiful Vision: A Century of Arts Education in Washington, D.C., 1900 – 2000". Work will take place at the museum on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. for a total of 10 hours a week and will include training. The contract begins January 2025 and runs through June 2025.?Further details are outlined in the attached RFQ and Statement of Work. #OnThisDay in 1960, Ruby Bridges integrated an all-white elementary school in the South. On her first day, 4 U.S. Marshals escorted Ruby and her mother to William Frantz Elementary School when local officials refused to protect her. For the entire school year, only one teacher, Barbara Henry, agreed to teach Ruby in a classroom by herself due to the withdrawal of students from her class by their parents. For over a year, Henry taught Ruby alone. Her father was fired from his job, and her grandparents were thrown off the farm they rented. Ruby persisted and finished the school year, remaining a student there through elementary school. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory ?? To keep the U.S. flag from falling into enemy hands, Sergeant Major Christian Fleetwood risked his life during the Civil War. As the Union Army advanced on Richmond, Virginia, Fleetwood and his fellow soldiers in the United States Colored Troops 4th Regiment Infantry faced off against Confederate troops at the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm in September 1864. When two of the regiment’s color bearers were shot in the battle, Fleetwood seized the American flag, rallying his fellow soldiers throughout the fight. In recognition for his bravery, Fleetwood became one of the first Black soldiers to earn the nation’s highest military award—the Medal of Honor.
