The SmartSat CRC will create leapfrogging technologies in advanced telecommunications and smart satellite systems to build Australia’s space infrastructure for advanced communications and connectivity, remote sensing and monitoring for its land, seas and oceans. It brings together nearly 100 partners and international collaborators which, together with significant investment by the Australian Federal Government, have committed $245 million, represents the biggest space industry R&D collaboration in Australia’s history. The SmartSat CRC will ensure Australia can execute a technological leap-frog to deliver smart satellite systems that are Australian designed, owned and operated and that will deliver the nation real-time connectivity, surveillance and sensing capability over land and sea, earth observation data to monitor climate and development, and the power to drive industry innovation and the growth of the Internet of Things. The SmartSat CRC will support Australia and Australian business and industry to be players in these areas of industry growth and innovation. It will also provide a platform for new generations of innovators to advance their research careers and develop their ideas and innovations. Today, Fleet Space announced the successful demonstration of two-way voice and data SATCOMs for the Australian Defence Force using our next-gen Centauri-6 satellite! Developed under an AUD$6.4 million contract with Defence in support of the ASCEND2LEO program, this is the first time full duplex SATCOMs have been delivered using advanced microsatellites in low Earth orbit—a game-changing breakthrough to develop sovereign multi-orbit space capabilities. We’re proud to drive these advances in microsatellite technology, establishing new innovation paths for high-performance SATCOM systems with reduced cost and greater resilience to further Australia’s Defence Space Strategy and align with the expanding needs of allies and international partners worldwide. SmartSat CRC's SCARLET Lab Masters students have won the Most Outstanding Poster for a Post Graduate Professional Capstone Project at the University of South Australia Enterprising STEM Expo 2024! ????? The Enterprising STEM Expo?offers students the chance to exhibit innovative projects designed to tackle real-world challenges presented by industry clients. Under the mentorship of SmartSat PhD student Donna Fitzgerald, students Arun Menon, Avinash Lohana, Reyna Roy and Shivani Shah took out the top prize for their poster on native vegetation classification using satellite imagery, outlining their project to apply advanced machine learning algorithms to classify land into either native vegetation, agriculture or housing.
