The Octothorpe House in Bend, OR, redefines custom residential design with its unique architectural form and innovative use of mass timber. Named after its distinctive shape, with eight wings extending around a central courtyard like a pound sign, this one-story home is a striking example of what’s possible with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). Built in 2021, this 310-square-meter residence uses CLT panels not just for its aesthetics but also for its gravity- and lateral-resisting systems. The home’s heating and cooling systems were strategically hidden within the attic areas, with discreet venting through the CLT wall panels, showcasing the material’s versatility and strength. Ever wonder how safe exterior wall cross-laminated timber panels can perform in a fire? Our team worked with a coalition of mass timber leaders to find this out! In 2022, Timberlab, Mithun, Arup, SmartLam North America?, ROCKWOOL Group, and Rothoblaas conducted NFPA 285 fire testing on exterior cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels to evaluate their performance under fire exposure conditions. The NFPA test is an industry-standard method for assessing the fire propagation characteristics of exterior wall assemblies that contain combustible components. This test aimed to verify the safety and resilience of CLT when used in these exterior applications. The results demonstrated that the panels effectively resisted fire spread, meeting the necessary fire safety code standards. "The fire test requires a two-story wall test assembly with a window opening in the lower room. The test includes the use of two separate gas burners. One is located within the lower story room and ignites at the start of the test. This burner provides a simulated interior fire that replicates the ASTM E119 Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials fire curve that is used to determine fire resistance. After five minutes of testing, a second gas burner is ignited outside the window to simulate large external flames. Supporting our military isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we actively do. Whether it’s partnering on crucial projects like this, recruiting veterans into key operational roles at SmartLam North America?, or participating in community events, our commitment to those who serve runs deep. This 74,000 SF, five-story, 127-room hotel, completed as part of the PAL program, stands as a testament to that commitment. Not only is it the third mass timber hotel designed and completed by Lendlease for the program, but it’s also the first to use American-produced Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) from our facility in Columbia Falls, MT. Completed in 2019, this project met the rigorous Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) requirements, finishing 37% faster than traditional methods with just an 11-man crew—7 of whom were veterans trained on-site. The efficiency gains were substantial, with a 40% reduction in crew size and man-hours and a 20% overall project schedule savings, thanks to innovative approaches like bath PODs and prefabricated mechanical ducting. a hyperlocal approach to architecture We’re thrilled to showcase the completed UF MASS Haptic Pavilion, a true testament to innovation and collaboration. Located at the heart of the University of Florida campus, just south of the Reitz Union North Lawn, this is the first mass timber structure on campus. It serves as a versatile space that transforms throughout the day—offering a place for teaching, respite from Florida’s intense sun and rains, game day gatherings, and standing as a beacon of hyper-local/regional wood building.? Utilizing the Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) at the University of Florida School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences Austin Cary Forest as our material depot, we embraced a hyper-local strategy for both material sourcing and architectural design.?A #3d scan of the forest helped identify low-grade trees that could be up-cycled into structural elements: a process addressing the question of #energy and #carbon in contemporary building practices. The selected trees were then analyzed and digitally cut into structural elements to be deployed in the MASS Haptic pavilion as structural members. The roof plane is from regionally sourced SYP material thanks to Rex Lumber and made into #clt panels by SmartLam North America?.
