Helping cities rethink their surfaces to cost-effectively address climate, equity, heat, flooding, and livability

关于我们

The Smart Surfaces Coalition is committed to the rapid, cost-effective global adoption of Smart Surfaces to enable cities to thrive despite climate threats, save cities billions of dollars, decrease heat, reduce flood risk, slow global warming, and improve city livability, health, equity and jobs. Jobs and internships: https://smartsurfacescoalition.org/careers The Coalition is comprised of 40+ leading NGOs from key sectors necessary to drive acceleration of urban smart surface adoption, including: architecture and design, city law and policy, downtowns, energy, equity/low-income, health, planning, urban data analytics. By providing the analytic tools, training, data, research, and support to influence city policies, the Smart Surfaces Coalition seeks to rapidly scale urban Smart Surface adoption globally. This is one of the few strategies available to cost-effectively reduce global CO2-equivalent emissions by 10%. Smart Surfaces include green, reflective, and porous surfaces, urban trees, and solar photovoltaics. By adopting Smart Surface policies, cities can cost-effectively lower emissions, cut peak summer temperatures, and reduce pollution while creating jobs and enhancing competitiveness. Urban meadows, a type of Smart Surface, offer a range of benefits for communities. Incorporating #GreenInfrastructure into city spaces does more than make them cooler: it enhances biodiversity, creates more enjoyable spaces for people, and supports pollinators. ???? Recent research shows that urban meadows are just as biodiverse as rural ones, with bees, butterflies, and other pollinators thriving in these vibrant patches: https://lnkd.in/gbpfdR3Q

???? At COP29, coalition partner American Forests is spotlighting the crucial role of trees in combating climate change, from wildfire resilience to cooling cities. Urban trees are essential for reducing heat-related health risks and improving climate resilience, especially in underserved communities. American Forests' Tree Equity Score tool and the historic $1.5 billion investment in urban forestry are key steps toward ensuring that all communities benefit from the cooling power of trees. ?? Let's not get lost in the #COP29 talk. To address climate change, we must develop equitable adaptation & mitigation strategies. There are thousands of ways to manage climate threats and lower global emissions, but keep in mind urban environments are home to over 50% of the global population. To protect and improve the daily lives of billions, we must be smart about how we build our cities and prioritize resilience and safety, from the ground we walk on to the roofs over our heads. We can do that with Smart Surfaces: reflective, porous, and nature-based infrastructure designs that reduce urban heat islands and lower flood risks while contributing to global cooling. These underinvested solutions, from cool roofs to rain gardens, are vital for transforming our communities into safe, thriving homes that can thrive in a changing climate. ?? 2024 is officially on track to become the hottest year on record. With global temperatures surpassing the critical 1.5°C threshold, millions are enduring deadly heat waves, wildfires, and catastrophic flooding. Alarmingly, the ten warmest years in recorded history have all occurred in the past decade. As Andrew Dessler, director of Texas A&M University’s Center for Climate Studies, explains: “The world is engineered for the climate of the 20th century, and we’re maladapted.” But we have the tools to engineer a better future. Smart Surfaces—like cool roofs, porous pavements, and green stormwater infrastructure—are proven, scalable solutions that can mitigate extreme heat, manage stormwater, and cut emissions. As temperatures rise, Smart Surface designs are imperative for surviving and thriving in our warming world. ??? New Results Released from Phoenix's Cool Pavement Program! ????? Phoenix, a member of the Cities for Smart Surfaces, recently announced new findings from the latest phase of its Cool Pavement Program, conducted in partnership with Arizona State University. This phase reveals that treating pavements with CoolSeal 2.0 can reduce surface temperatures by up to 12°F compared to conventional asphalt, offering a powerful tool against the urban heat island effect. Beyond cooling, CoolSeal is estimated to double the lifespan of traditional seal coats—lasting up to eight years—which could yield major economic and environmental benefits by reducing road maintenance needs. Phoenix continues to lead the way in climate-smart infrastructure, setting a strong example for cities nationwide. ?? ??
