We did it! Thanks to the incredible generosity of 200+ donors, we not only reached our Give to the Max Day goal—we exceeded it, raising over $50,000 to outfit workers experiencing homelessness with the tools they need to succeed! One donor beautifully captured why this work matters: "We really believe Small Sums is reaching those in need and are thankful to be a part of it. A few weeks ago, you posted a picture of a gentleman I worked with back in 2016. I always wondered what happened to him. Seeing him holding items for work with a huge smile made my day. Thank you for reminding the men and women who walk through your door that they are valued and have worth—it shows in the smiles we see." It’s because of you—our incredible community of donors, volunteers, and supporters—that those smiles are possible. Together, we’re changing lives, one worker at a time, by ensuring they are valued and equipped for success. As we celebrate this milestone, we also look ahead. My brother Jeff Charis-Carlson, and his wife, Chris, have a thoughtful approach to giving. Their standard gift is $1 a day—$365 a year. I’m not sure how they decided on this amount, but ever since Jeff shared it with me, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. What a beautiful way to invest in an organization and the people it serves. What could $1 a day accomplish at Small Sums? It would provide the foundation for countless lives to move forward. After serving time in prison, Quiyla faced significant barriers as she worked to reenter the community. Living at RS EDEN, a reentry house for women experiencing homelessness, she struggled to find an employer willing to give her a chance. “I’ve been experiencing challenges since I’ve been out with my background,” Quiyla shared. “Certain places won’t hire me.” Determined to move forward, Quiyla joined a work training program through Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota and connected with Small Sums. We provided her with the essentials she needed—work gear, a bus pass, and, most importantly, encouragement. “Small Sums provides a sense of motivation,” Quiyla said. “I’m inspired by my ability to change and to inspire others through my story.” Every day, more workers like Quiyla need just a little support to succeed.
