Quinn & Co. Communications is a Black- and women-led communications consultancy and small business that empowers women-owned brands to connect with their communities through authentic storytelling. small c worked with Quinn & Co. to create a visual identity that represents their values and a brand strategy that highlights their commitment to socially conscious PR and marketing. The project scope included: ? Brand strategy ? Visual identity ? Logo design ? Website strategy ? Website design ? Website development Before kicking off any design work, we collaborated with Quinn and Co to define their brand’s audience, mission, values, positioning and personality. The visual identity is inspired by concepts of wellness and communication. The logomark is clean and airy with bursting lines that represent growth, amplification and creativity. These lines are carried throughout graphic elements to create emphasis and symbolize ideation. The visual identity also features: ? TT Norms Pro, a contemporary, geometric sans serif from TypeType Foundry that feels clean and welcoming ? Earth tones and desaturated blues that feel warm, human and grounded ? Illustrations and icons that are inspired by both the logo and Quinn & Co’s services Quinn and Co’s founder, Jemila (Woodson) Campbell, MPA, shared this testimonial when the brand launched: “I didn’t know where to begin branding my small business and small c was patient and gracious while also blowing me away with their ideas on how to position my brand to stand out amongst so many competitors. I simply could not have gotten it done without them.” Check out the full case study on our website. #branding #webdesign #smallbusiness #design #designstudio #prbranding

With Election Day just two weeks away, we’re highlighting three nonpartisan nonprofits that are working to increase voter turnout and improve voter access for all. ???????? When We All Vote’s mission is to increase voter participation by helping to close the race and age gap. They empower people to vote, advocate for their rights, and hold their elected officials accountable through educational resources, events and volunteer opportunities. Vote.org’s mission is to remove barriers between voters and the ballot box, especially for historically underserved voters of color and underrepresented young voters. They provide easy-to-use tools to register, apply to vote by mail, find a polling place and more as well as resources to understand voting rules, rights and deadlines. The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has been working to?protect and defend?the right to vote since 1963. They staff an Election Protection hotline (866-OUR-VOTE) that voters can call or text for information and assistance at any stage of the voting process. Are you registered to vote? Many states’ deadlines are this month, so make sure to check your registration and apply now to vote early or by mail. small c just turned one and to close out our birthday month, we’re celebrating the people who made this first year possible. ?? We work with a wide range of clients with varying levels of resources. To make sure we’re able to support those clients and their communities, we work with a functionally diverse network of collaborators. Copywriter Annie Cottrell Johnson, one of our core collaborators, created small c’s verbal identity and wrote much of our website content. She continues to provide expert writing and brand strategy services to our clients. Brand and marketing strategist Julie Potyraj helped develop our signature Brand Lab offering, an immersive strategy workshop designed to help clients kick off rebrands and new brand identities. Designer and illustrator Allison B. designed gorgeous illustrations for our first project with The Well at Oxon Run, powered by DC Greens. Copy professionals Betsy Plowman and Emily Newhook provided editing services, brand strategy guidance and copywriting that helped shape the small c website. Copywriter Mary Scott Manning wrote our first blog post about small c signing the Clean Creatives pledge and continues to help shape our LinkedIn content strategy. Content marketer Amanda Smith helped us support Counter Tools with technical writing and Tableau data visualizations. We’re grateful for the support and collaboration these folks have offered, and for the community we’re building together. ??

All September, we’ve celebrated small c studio's first trip around the sun. It’s been a year of growth, and we've been honored to partner with organizations who care about people and the planet. Today, we're sharing the numbers behind our business. A couple aren’t the typical agency metrics — such as the number of small businesses and nonprofits supported — but they’re the ones that matter most to our mission.? Through sharing our highlights, we hope to provide transparency for anyone starting on their own entrepreneurship journey — plus a friendly reminder that everyone’s numbers will look different based on their unique combination of resources and privileges. If you’re seeking brand, web design or content support in the coming year, small c is looking for new projects. DM us! #designstudio #smallbusiness #creativeagency

New work ?? We are so excited to share our recent rebrand of Counter Tools, a public health consulting nonprofit that aims to promote health equity and enact policy change in communities nationwide. Counter Tools offers reliable technology, accessible data analytics, and full-spectrum, tailored support. The project scope included: ? Brand strategy ? Verbal identity ? Visual identity ? Logo design ? Website copy ? Website design ? Website development We started the project with an in-depth, collaborative strategy session?during which we developed a competitive analysis, discussed Counter Tools’ target audience and defined how the brand should be perceived. Based on the insights from the strategy session, we wrote a brand positioning statement and value propositions that distinguish Counter Tools from other data-focused, public health nonprofits. We also created a voice and tone guide along with boilerplate copy to help Counter Tools develop consistent, clear marketing and communication assets quickly and easily. Counter Tools aims to be a supportive partner to their clients, providing geographical, community data and guidance that can inspire policy change. Taking inspiration from both a compass and a star, the Counter Tools logomark represents a geographical tool. The interlocking triangles symbolize the interconnectivity of a community and the power of working together. The visual identity also includes: →?Duplicate Sans, an elegant and contemporary sans serif typeface from Commercial Type →?Energizing colors that connote health and action →?Subtle map textures that reference community data →?Flat icons inspired by navigational tools Check out the full case study on our website. #branding #webdesign #nonprofit #design #smallbusiness #designstudio

Our founder Claire Smalley shares six lessons from small c's first year.
Supporting social impact organizations through strategic design | Founder & creative director of small c studio
Year one as a creative entrepreneur wasn’t perfect, but it taught me more than I ever imagined. Here’s the shortlist of what I’ve learned. 1. Invest in your systems and processes upfront. I started the year not only prioritizing client work, but also evaluating ?????? I did that work. This allowed me?to build systems and templates to streamline the non-creative work. And as a result, my clients and I could focus more energy on the creative work than the logistics. 2. Get comfortable with being a beginner. Part of me loves being a beginner; I find it deeply rewarding to learn and practice new skills. But the stakes are high when you’re starting a business, and it was hard to enjoy learning as much as I usually do. I had to train myself to embrace learning as a professional imperative, not just something I do for fun. A few things I did: → Immersed myself in books and case studies about creative businesses → Networked with other founders, entrepreneurs and creative communities (see below) → Researched other agencies’ processes 3. Reframe mistakes.? No amount of type-A energy could shield me from the realities of owning a business — or making mistakes. But what I can manage is my response. Instead of beating myself up after a mistake, I try to reflect, give myself a bit of grace, and document what happened, so I can make better mistakes next time. 4. Compare yourself to yourself. I sometimes fall into the trap of comparing small c to more established companies and feeling Not Good Enough as a result. But when I focus my attention on my own to-do lists, projects and proposals I realize that I’ve gotten a lot done, become more efficient, productive and — ultimately — self-assured in the process. 5. Don’t do it alone. We’re all better when we’re part of a community. Over the course of this first year I joined a number of communities that have been a source of encouragement, opportunities and genuine connections including: Ladies Get Paid, Climate DC, Clean Creatives, Freelance DC, Climate Designers and Work for Impact. 6. Give and receive help. Being vulnerable — as a first-time business owner, as a creative, as a woman — is scary. But it’s essential if you want to connect with people and opportunities that inspire you to grow. That can look like asking for help even when you don’t feel like you need it (this opens you up to more growth than you could have anticipated). But it can also mean offering support, not just asking for it. I’m incredibly grateful and privileged for everything I’ve learned and experienced this year. If this post resonated with you, follow small c studio’s journey by clicking + Follow on our profile page. I’d also love to hear: what’s a key lesson you’ve learned through your professional life the last year?
