?? Get to know our Living Labs! Starting out with Living Lab North, located in Norway ???? ??Forests here are dominated by spruces, pines and birches Forest ownership in this Living Lab is characterised by ?? A high number of owners: 48,000 ?? A large part of the forest land is privately owned: 88% ?? The average size of each forest is 54 hectares Living Lab North explores how forest management strategies can be adapted to the adverse effects of climate change in the context of fragmented ownership. ?? ???? PALENCIA, SPAIN - We are happy to share photos and takeaways from our second in-person consortium meeting this week! ?? First, we visited the site of our living lab South, where local small-scale #forestowners provided valuable insights into their #multifunctionalmanagement practices and elaborated on best practices, barriers, and motivations. It was also an ample opportunity for local forest owners to engage with forest-owner representatives from other countries that are part of our consortium, fostering a space to share key takeaways and inspire transposability. The day finished with visits to two wood-product factories, allowing us to see various aspects of the local forestry value chain. ???? Then together we shared updates on project progress, highlighting the work that has been done over the past 10 months since our kick-off meeting in ?s, Norway. Partners from Spain ????, Germany ????, Norway ????, Romania ????, and European representatives based in Brussels ???? presented their work. This ensured that all partners are aligned with the project vision, showcasing project results and identifying potential exploitation opportunities. ?? Finally, we engaged in a co-creation session with our sister project SMURF - The forest owners' project , where both projects were presented, and future synergies pathways were brought to attention. It was an exciting session, and both consortiums are keen to collaborate on research outputs, communication, and dissemination activities, as well as foster collective exploitation pathways. ?? ?? We're excited to announce a key milestone for the #Small4Good project: the establishment of regional Living Labs (LL) in the four representative regions North?????, Central?????/????, South?????, and East????? that represent the diverse forestry landscapes in Europe. ?? These LLs are designed to be real-world innovation ecosystems, fostering the co-creation of sustainable solutions for small-forest owners. ?? This collaborative approach involves forest owners, research organizations, private companies, and governmental and non-governmental organizations, aiming to create joint value and sustainable impact. We've recently conducted our first stakeholder workshops in the various LLs, marking the start of this co-creation journey. ???? As we progress, we remain aligned with the policy targets of the EU Green Deal and the EU Forest Strategy. ?? Stay connected for more updates as we continue our work towards sustainable and multifunctional forest management. ?? Small machines, going big! ?? As part of our project, we are developing #management models for small forest owners, which require customised forestry-work systems and machinery for on-site implementation. ?? While the trend in industrial #forestry is towards larger machines, this isn’t a viable option for #smallforestowners. ?? Instead, we’re seeing a shift towards multi-use, compact #machines like the remote-controlled Pfanzelt Maschinenbau GmbH “Moritz” mini crawler (see photos). ?To make machine implementation easier for semi-professional users, our coordinator NIBIO is working on solutions within Small4Good to semi-automate the Moritz’s in-stand #navigation and accessory functions. ???? Our very own Steffan Lloyd presented NIBIO’s Moritz concept at the recent 56th?International Symposium on Forestry Mechanization (FORMEC) in Gdańsk, Poland. It was a fantastic opportunity to get feedback from our peers in the forest operations #research community. ???? The following week, we attended the 18th German Center for Forest Work and Technology (#KWF) Tagung in Schwarzenborn, the world’s biggest forestry equipment show. ?? There, we had the chance to meet with practitioners, equipment developers, and manufacturers to see and discuss current trends of mini crawlers for all kinds of forest operations, from stand establishment to final harvest. ?? ?? Project partners from The University of G?ttingen, Menon Economics, and Eidg. Forschungsanstalt WSL gathered with The University of Freiburg to discuss the motivations and barriers for #multifunctionalmanagement across #Europe when it comes to small-scale forest owners. ?? They shared preliminary insights from conducted explorative interviews with #forest administrations (private/state), rangers, and small #forestowners from our living lab regions as well as deliberated on the content and dissemination strategies of the planned survey to combine all interests in a collaborative workshop manner. ?? ? About our project, Small4Good. ???? 16 million small #forestowners represent approximately 60% of Europe’s #forest area, and their actions are crucial for achieving #biodiversity and #ecosystem goals outlined in the #EUForestStrategy and the #EuropeanGreenDeal. ?? But how do we engage these owners due to their small property size, limited capacities, and knowledge of often inactive managers? Our Small4Good vision! ?? We aim to enable small-forest owners to safeguard #biodiversity and enhance #ecosystemservices from Europe’s forests. They would do this by developing multifunctional and locally adapted management models. All of these backed by #paymentsforecosystemservices (PES) schemes and endorsed through #digital- and #AI-based solutions. ?? To ensure long-term impact, we’re aligning our models with the personal motivations of forest owners alongside the diverse #ecosystem and #socioeconomic conditions across #Europe.? We’re adopting a co-creation approach via multi-actor #livinglabs in four European regions for rapid prototyping, implementation, and acceptability.?? ?? Stay tuned to follow our #transdisciplinary team of experts and stakeholder representatives over the next four years to support small-scale forest owners in implementing sustainable and multifunctional forest management.?Here is a picture of our kick-off meeting in ?s, Norway in January this year, hosted by NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research ???? ??
