In February, we were so excited to host an in-person parent education event, centered around promoting children's development through playtime! It was such a joy to have so many families together at Small Steps learning and having fun with their kids ??
关于我们
Small Steps’ mission is to provide an exemplary early childhood program to instill and foster the social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children and their families. Small Steps Nurturing Center operates two preschools for economically at-risk students living in the First, Second, Fourth, and Fifth Wards of Houston, Texas. Small Steps provides a high-quality education, a nurturing Christian environment, transportation, nutritional meals and social and emotional therapy to economically at-risk children, ages two through six. Small Steps invests in the lives of these children through meeting their needs, intervening early, and setting them on a trajectory filled with greater opportunities. Several well-known, long-term studies have demonstrated the long-term benefits of early childhood education for economically at-risk children into adulthood for themselves and for the community at large. Thus, the investment that Small Steps is making in its students’ education will result in significant economic dividends for the greater Houston community for decades. Small Steps also invests in the community through establishing a relationship with the students’ families, holding parent education meetings, and connecting families with other social services available in the community.

What a way to celebrate Black History Month! Throughout February, our students learned about black innovators and trailblazers like Mae Jemison, Cicely Tyson, Alma Thomas, Jackie Robinson, and so many more. They took what they learned and put together amazing class projects for today’s Black History Museum exhibit!

One of the key tenets of Small Steps' SET for Life program is the language we use. Everyone on campus is well versed in several key words and phrases that aid in development and make children feel safe and welcome at school. "Take a look" at some of these phrases and how they apply in the classroom!?#SmallStepsSpotlight

Once students have mastered identifying and differentiating their emotions, early childhood educators can begin helping students begin to manage these emotions internally. As their ability to manage these feelings on their own increases, students can then focus their attention more easily and manage their behavior both in and out of the classroom. ? ? The goal of emotional regulation is never to "fix" or remove a child's emotions. It is our job as adults to help them feel understood and learn how to identify their feelings independently so they can regulate themselves in a productive way. #SmallStepsSpotlight

Knowing how to navigate emotions and regulate responses is a skill we use the rest of our lives. Today I hope all the SSNC students felt joy and wonder as they experienced snow! #earlychildhodeducation #socialemotional #SmallSteps
One of the most important elements of early childhood is emotional development, how we show our feelings to the world. Before children can learn to manage their big emotions, they first must understand and master emotional expression. Our SET For Life team helps in and out of the classroom, giving students opportunities and tools to identify what they are feeling and validate their experience. Once they understand these emotions, they can then begin to connect them to age-appropriate behaviors while in the classroom at Small Steps and going forward to elementary school. #SmallStepsSpotlight
