This week’s featured Communication alumna is Hannah Scheckel ‘19. Hannah’s Communication concentration was in Advertising and Public Relations and she’s now a social media manager. ??What is your job? What do you do? I am the Social Media Specialist at St. Louis Community College! I have the privilege of managing our social media accounts: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Threads. I deeply enjoy storytelling, and at STLCC, there is no shortage of stories to be told! I love hearing each person’s unique narrative. ??What inspires or excites you about your work or industry? I absolutely love to learn! Working in social media is a great fit for me because it’s always changing and evolving! There is always a new algorithm change or feature to explore. I also deeply enjoy working in higher education. It is so rewarding to see students grow, develop, and eventually graduate! ??What was one of your best experiences as a SLUComm student? Presenting our Weinerschnitzel campaign for the National Student Advertising Competition in Kansas City was such a memorable experience! I learned a lot about working on a large team and collaborating with other communication professionals. ??What is your best advice for SLU Comm students? Get involved! I got firsthand experience in social media management by managing the socials for two clubs I was in. This way, I got to try out my desired career path and have fun while doing it!

If you know any graduates of our program, you know our alumni are awesome. We’re highlighting SLUComm alumni to share updates about their careers, accomplishments, and advice for current Communication students. Our first featured alumna is Grace Dunlavy ‘22. Grace earned a degree with a concentration in Integrated Strategic Communication (ISC) and now works at Codeword, a communication design agency in New York City. ?? What is your job? What do you do? As a PR Senior Account Executive at Codeword, I work with B2B and B2C clients on media relations, content development, campaign strategy development, events, and speaking/awards programs. ?? What is one of your best memories from your SLUComm experience? One of the most valuable classes I took in the Comm department was the portfolio class. I have found that every single employer has asked for my portfolio and I have used the one I made in that class ever since! I learned a lot about how to market myself and how to highlight my strongest attributes and accomplishments related to my career field - plus I had a lot of fun! ?? What is your best advice for SLU Comm students? RAISE YOUR HAND! Getting as involved as possible, gaining experiences (sometimes things that you don't expect to bring you much, actually do), cold dm'ing on LinkedIn, not being afraid to network are all things that will get you far in a Communication career. Seize every opportunity to meet new people, expand your network, use your connections, learn something, and showcase your expertise! ?? Can we humble brag on your behalf?? I have two bylines published in the ad/marketing space and have been featured in a CNBC article.? Check them out here:? Fall semester began with new leadership in the Department of Communication. Dr. Timothy Huffman is serving as the interim chair with Dr. Karla Scott serving as the interim associate chair. Their experience and engagement on campus and in the St. Louis community will be invaluable as they steer the department's critical administrative functions in addition to their teaching duties. Drs. Huffman and Scott replaced Dr. Dan Kozlowski, who was promoted to Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Our thanks go to Dr. Kozlowski for his years of dedication to the Department of Communication and to Drs. Huffman and Scott for their unwaivering support of the students, faculty, and staff as our interim leaders.
