A notable milestone was our participation in the 3rd California International Arbitration Week, showcasing SIAA's growing presence in the robust California dispute resolution community. It's with great pleasure that we concluded our last offline event at Stanford Law School this quarter with a truly stellar panel - Maria Chedid (Partner, Arnold & Porter), Steven K. Andersen (Vice President, International Development International Centre for Dispute Resolution? (ICDR)) and Joshua W. (Co-Founder of?CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics and CEO of?System.Legal). The panel (or what eventually became a conversation!) was on "Reinventing International Technology, IP, and Life Sciences Disputes: Is AI the Key?". Steve and Maria kicked off the discussion by explaining the problems in using arbitration as a form of dispute resolution in technology, IP and life sciences disputes. Maria proceeded to explain the survey conducted by ICDR and helped the audience narrow down these problems with specific statistics. With Steve's expert moderation, Joshua stepped in to discuss potential AI solutions including ways to obtain clean data, eliminating bias, training large language models and potential ways practitioners and arbitrators can increase AI usage in arbitrations with minimal risks. While our attendants were largely SLS students, we were also very happy to welcome back AI and dispute enthusiasts including Colin Rule, Les Schiefelbein, Ken Korea and Leonard Park- who contributed with their own practical insights. The speakers were introduced by Vaishali Movva, Co-President of the SIAA, and the event was conducted with the help of Grace Yang and Andrii Chornous (Co-Presidents of SIAA).

The?Stanford International Arbitration Association held a fireside chat with Steven L. Smith, Of Counsel at Jones Day at Stanford Law School on the origins of arbitration in the United States and California. Steve graciously explained the Libyan Nationalization, the revolution in Iran and the Iranian hostage crisis, the Algiers Accords, the establishment of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal and Warren Christopher's key role, how his own practice developed post the Iranian claims, opportunities to look out for in international disputes - and most importantly, invaluable advice to young students on building their careers as practitioners. The Stanford International Arbitration Association (SIAA) held a webinar today on 'Investor State Dispute Settlement and Energy Transition', with Viren Mascarenhas (Partner, Milbank LLP), Ankita Ritwik (Of Counsel, Gibson Dunn ), Sven Volkmer, FCIArb (Partner, White & Case LLP) and moderated by Professor Alan Sykes (Professor of Law, Stanford Law School). Our participants included law students, law firms, independent arbitrators and financial institutions. The panel discussed many pertinent issues, including kinds of international disputes that have emerged out of the energy transition movement (State action and inaction), the Rockhopper arbitration, clauses often invoked in investor claims, disputes under the ECT, whether there's a bright-line test in ascertaining whether a claim is successful, potential ways for investors to safeguard investments in a project cycle and calculating compensation in fossil fuel phase-outs, We would like to thank our panelists for taking the time out and providing their valuable insights on this topic! We were very fortunate to have Marek Krasula meet a few members of the Stanford International Arbitration Association yesterday at Stanford Law School, for a small fireside chat on the International Chamber of Commerce. Amongst other topics, Marek spoke to the students about his career trajectory, what it's like to work at the ICC, the value of the scrutiny process at the ICC (with some hilarious examples!), difficult positions that an institution encounters during an arbitration, ICC's report on dispute prevention, issues of enforceability and dos-and-don'ts for young practitioners forging a career in international disputes.
