Stephanie Barclay, Christy Ferioli, Lennon Bancroft and Amy McDonald attended the State Bar's Pathways to Justice conference this week with 300 other legal service providers. The conference was packed with innovative ideas for improving access to justice and delivery of critical legal services to vulnerable populations. We were honored to be invited to speak on a panel discussion about our Shriver Housing Program. Our team is coming back inspired and energized to serve our clients in need! Many thanks to the State Bar of California, Judicial Council of California, and Legal Aid Association of California (LAAC) for an excellent conference!

This week SLOLAF said goodbye to former Executive Director Donna Jones. After almost six years at the helm of SLOLAF, Donna is leaving the non-profit sector and heading off to a financial management position. Under Donna's leadership, the organization grew tremendously and increased services to low-income SLO County residents with critical legal needs. Donna says, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported SLOLAF over the past few years. It's hard work, but the people I've encountered along the way and everything I've learned have made it so worthwhile. SLOLAF's staff is phenomenal, offering first-rate legal assistance to our County's most vulnerable residents. Our Board of Directors is top notch as well. You are in good hands moving forward, and I wish you all the very best." SLOLAF's incoming Executive Director Stephanie Barclay, who worked with Donna for five years as SLOLAF's Legal Director and preceded Donna in the Executive Director role said, "Donna has worked so hard for SLOLAF for six years, and as a dedicated event volunteer even before that. We are extremely grateful for the financial skills and design talents that she brought to the organization and to our popular annual fundraising event. Donna gracefully led SLOLAF through years of growth and change, including the pandemic years. The organization and the community owe her a debt of gratitude. We will miss Donna and wish her all the best."

It's International Women's Day today, and we are pleased as can be to share that our own Melodie Rivas, Legal Director of Family Law Services, received the 2024 Outstanding Woman Lawyer award from Women Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo County on Wednesday. This award is given to a local woman lawyer with seven years or more work experience actively promoting the advancement of women. Besides the work Melodie does heading up SLOLAF's Family Law Services program (serving survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking), Melodie also is a professor at the San Luis Obispo College of Law and regularly mentors students studying to become lawyers themselves. Several of her students nominated her for this award, and we couldn't agree more. Congratulations, Melodie!
