?? Unlocking India’s Digital Future: Why Simplifying Telecom Regulations Matters! ?? As India races towards becoming a digitally empowered economy, it’s essential that our regulatory framework evolves to keep pace. In our submissions to TRAI for Framework for Authorisaitons under the Indian Telecommunications Act, 2023, EXTREME has championed a critical perspective: Regulations should be streamlined to promote innovation, inclusivity, and ease of doing business. The legislative intent of the Act is clear—simplification, modernization, and making India’s telecom sector more accessible. Here’s how we believe this can be achieved: 1?? Authorisation for Services Using Scarce Resources: Services that utilize scarce resources like spectrum or those that directly impact public safety and health should rightly be under the purview of authorisation. This ensures responsible use and oversight of critical assets while protecting public interests. 2?? Exemptions for all other Services: For services that do not involve scarce resources or pose significant risks—like many aspects of digital infrastructure and content delivery, Internet Exchanges, —regulations should be exempt altogether. This approach reduces unnecessary barriers, encourages broader participation from smaller players, and accelerates the deployment of innovative technologies. 3?? Simplification for Inclusivity: By aligning regulations with the legislative intent of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, we can foster an environment where new entrants can thrive, infrastructure can scale quickly, and consumers can benefit from enhanced connectivity and competitive pricing. As I discussed in my recent interview with MediaNama the goal should be to create a regulatory framework that supports growth, rather than stifles it. We need to focus on reducing complexity, eliminating redundant permissions, and ensuring that our policies reflect the dynamic needs of India’s evolving digital landscape. ?? The path forward is clear: Simplify, Authorise where necessary, and Exempt where appropriate. This is how we will unlock the true potential of India’s telecom sector and drive inclusive digital growth.
