关于我们
Sydnie L. Mosley Dances (SLMDances) is a New York City-based dance-theater collective that works in communities to organize for gender and racial justice through experiential dance performance. SLMDances' works engage audiences in the artistic process; our dances provoke a visceral reaction to the physicality on stage, and incite conversation toward community action. The works reflect real life experiences central to our identities, and pulls focus to the stories of women and Black folks. The movement vocabulary fluidly integrates modern dance techniques and movement of the African Diaspora, while dancers frequently use their voice with spoken text and audible breath. Through dimensional compositions, specific, textured movement, humor and character development, choreographed works appeal to a sense of humanity. SLMDances has shown work at Harlem Stage’s The Takeover, The Performance Project @ University Settlement, Dixon Place, 92nd St Y, The Chen Dance Center newsteps program, the FIGMENT Festival on Governor’s Island, RoofTopDance, The Actor's Fund Arts Center, the Harlem Arts Alliance Artz, Rootz & Rhythm Festival, Movement Research at Judson Church, Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX), Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), Triskelion Arts, The Red Carpet Theater at Taino Towers, as a part of the New York Foundation for the Arts Boot Camp Arts Festival at Joyce SoHo, The New School for Hollaback!’s HOLLA:Revolution, Barnard College, Cornell University, Penn State, Duke University, the Exponential Finance Conference, in addition to the annual NYC anti-street harassment rally, and many other outdoor performances. The collective situates itself amongst the Harlem arts community by creating and presenting dance uptown; partnering with other Harlem artists and businesses; and focusing community-based initiatives within Harlem. SLMDances travels for projects both domestically and internationally as relevant to the mission and interests of the collective.

SLMDances is?moving into our *15th season* of producing performance, sharing our learnings, and connecting with communities through dance. This is an absolute miracle made possible by the generous offerings of?*generations of artistic collaborators* and folks like you, who are a part of our broader net-that-works (h/t to The People’s Institute of Survival and Beyond). In honor of our value of transparency, here are some key updates: ?We are releasing our collective model and operating with a small, project-based team to produce our public-facing events. ?For now, we’re embracing a “pick up company” structure and hiring a few key project-based roles to support our work. ?In 2025, we will begin a more formal strategic planning process so that we can build capacity for all the amazing work that SLMDances has yet to do. Stay tuned for updates on our season happenings and how you can #ExperienceSLMDances. SLMDances is?shifting in a major way. Since 2013, we have operated?in a long-term structure, employing?Creative Partners?for year-long contracts that held us accountable to a weekly rehearsal ritual?to facilitate ongoing performances, community engagement, residencies and the development of new work. In these past few months,?we came to the conclusion that?this model is no longer sustainable.?We are sunsetting the Creative Partner Role.?To honor transparency, we want to share with you why we made this decision: 1???Money.?We cannot financially sustain our growth in the way that artists deserve to be sustained. 2???Capacity.?Our current leadership does not have the capacity for management.? 3???The vision is complete.?We have achieved A LOT together, most recently a World Premiere and a Tour, and we are proud of us. What does this mean for our community??Mainly, that you can expect to hear a lot less from SLMDances.?Creative Partners functioned not only as artists, but as administrative managers for the collective, so as they depart from these roles, our capacity will decrease: ?? Our regular e-newsletter will be shared quarterly.? ?? We will post less frequently on social media. Transformation is inevitable.?We are welcoming it with open arms. #ExperienceSLMDances ?? SLMDances had a wonderful time dancing with the Juniper Communities, and we can’t wait for more! Want to bring SLMDances in to dance with you? Send us a note! https://lnkd.in/efJsqZ5Q
Our Juniper community in State College, PA partnered with the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State University and Sydnie L. Mosley Dances to for a storytelling and dance workshop that will inspire an original piece. Professional performing artists Jessica Lee and Candance Sumpter led the group of women in creative movement exercises. Each member was asked to share a story about a time in their lives when they experienced joy. The women created new moments of joy as they moved, shared, and laughed together. The material created from this workshop will be used in preparation for the dance company's upcoming performance of their work, Purple. Juniper looks forward to hosting the artists again this fall when they will share the finished work! Collaborations such as these build bridges between communities and are a hallmark of the Juniper experience. We celebrate these individuals who are embracing "the spirit of life"! #nurtureyourspirit #dancers #lifeinthethirdact #creators #collaboration #olderwomenrock #wedocoolthings #joyful #neverstoplearning #seniorliving #junipercommunities
