Last week, our Managing Partner, Paul McMahon sat down with Kaori Y. from the Financial Times to discuss our latest Forestry white paper and the launch of the new SLM Silva Fund II. Our research reveals that continuous cover forestry (CCF) could store up to 20% more carbon per hectare compared to traditional clear-fell management practices ??. Paul highlighted how a CCF-focused fund offers “the biggest bang for your buck” in terms of carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and strong financial returns. Joining the discussion, Paddy Purser, co-owner of Purser Tarlton Russell, pointed out “The change in the forestry model requires a cultural change.” From sawmillers to timber purchasers, the industry has long been reliant on the easy, formulaic approach to timber production — a mindset that’s ripe for transformation. Key takeaways from the paper: ?? There are investment opportunities in European forestry for institutional investors, as the region undergoes a transition to a low-carbon economy with more demand for wood products. Investors can assist with the?aggregation of fragmented properties?into efficient portfolios and the?introduction of active management?to previously neglected forests. ??Climate change will stress forests with extreme weather events and new pests and diseases, forcing them to evolve. At the same time, society needs forests to provide more carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services, while still producing a steady supply of wood for low-carbon economy.?The historical approach, centred around even-aged, single-species forests and rotational forest management is no longer fit for purpose. ??Continuous Cover Forestry is an alternative forest management practice that has great potential?within European Forestry to deliver compelling economic returns, alongside positive social and environmental outcomes. The paper presents the growing body of research demonstrating the financial superiority of CCF in multiple contexts, as well as the social and environmental benefits of CCF, which are well-known and uncontroversial: more carbon sequestration, higher biodiversity, better protection of soils and water, higher amenity and scenic value. The release of the white paper comes alongside the formal announcement of our new fund, the SLM Silva Fund II, which aims to transition 19,000 hectares of forest to regenerative management. Key milestones in our 2023 report include: ?? Integration of Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations: adding seven core and sector-specific metrics through materiality and feasibility assessments. ??Increased carbon accounting: expanding coverage from 21% in 2022 to 100% of all assets owned for longer than nine months. ?? Voices from the field: Including input from farmers and foresters managing our portfolio assets. Key 2023 highlights: ?? 40% growth in AUM, driven by rising interest in natural capital. ?? 20,000 tonnes of food and 21,000 m3 of timber harvested. ?? 100,000 tCO2e (gross) sequestration via farms and forests. This report marks our first integration of TNFD recommendations and presents firm-wide carbon accounting results.
