At Slingshot, we believe the work we do should Bring People Together. That ethos extends not only to our clients and partners, but to the incredible architecture and design community we are a part of. Pigott has created something truly special with its Spark project, which brings together cohorts of professionals to meet in small groups and engage in large-group learning and professional development opportunities. Slingshot Interior Designer Tiffany Young is part of the 2024 Spark cohort. “It has been really special to get to know other designers within the community on a personal basis,” she says. “It’s fun to discover the ways we may articulate things differently, but many of the challenges and opportunities we face are so similar. The Bridge District is unique, not just for its accessibility (it’s located just off of Des Moines’ main interstate) but also for its proximity to some of the best amenities and opportunities in the city: the Des Moines River and surrounding green spaces and parks, and Des Moines’ historic East Village neighborhood, with its local shops and restaurants. As with many urbanist infill projects, the site itself presents both challenges and opportunities, especially for residential living. But at Slingshot, we thrive on solving complex challenges with creative and often simple solutions. For Level Apartments, we situated the building so the communal exterior spaces, such as the massive deck that overlooks the Des Moines River, are insulated from interstate traffic noise, and interior residential units are protected from sound transmittance. At the same time, the design prioritizes access to trails, public art, and the river walk. Iowa Architect magazine curates the best in Iowa architecture and technology related to the field. We’re honored that the The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter has elected Slingshot Director Steve Miller to the magazine’s editorial board. “I’m impressed by the way Iowa Architect Magazine elevates our profession with thoughtful articles, beautiful photography and excellent graphic design,” Steve says. “We have an abundance of talented architects doing work in our state and it’s an honor to serve alongside many of them on the editorial board to continue raising the bar for design in Iowa and celebrating the diversity of excellent work being done throughout the state.” Steve is based in Slingshot’s office in Iowa City, where he also served as chair of the Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and now serves on the Planning and Zoning Commission. On this National Dessert Day, we’re celebrating a sweet success story. In 2020, Nadia Ahissou began baking and selling pastries from her home. Demand drove her to open a booth at the Des Moines’ Farmers Market, where her quiches, breads, and sweets were such a hit, she sold out of them every week. Nadia needed more space: a bigger kitchen to accommodate staff, and a place where patrons could gather to enjoy coffee and her made-from-scratch treats. A former Jimmy John’s restaurant, centrally located in Des Moines, provided the shell for what would become Nadia’s French Bakery. Slingshot’s Interiors Team transformed the space into a Parisian-inspired bakery, with cozy seating areas to sip and savor. Nadia says everything she makes is baked “with love,” and her new space reflects that spirit. When Walnut Creek Church found a permanent home for its growing south Des Moines congregation, the location was perfect… but the ‘60s-era building was not. It lacked accessible restrooms, there was no sprinkler system, and the architecture was dated. The layout needed to accommodate a large fellowship space plus flexible areas for weekday programming. A renovation of the existing building plus an addition not only created the welcoming vibe that Walnut Creek wanted to extend to the neighborhood, it also solved complex code challenges. From auto parts store to elevated neighborhood restaurant and bar, Either/Or is an example of what is possible through the lens of optimistic adaptive reuse. Creative design solutions enabled Either/Or to achieve its goal of delivering a space that is equally welcoming to date nights, family dinners, or exuberant evenings out with friends. As the calendar turns toward fall, the homey and eclectic interior isn’t the only place to hang out and enjoy the cozy vibes: Outside, a massive covered patio that is kid- and dog-friendly, children’s playscape, and an acre of green space near a popular Central Iowa bike trail make it an ideal autumn hang.
