  • It’s no secret that we're fans of adaptive reuse. This project is special not only because we’re proud to help one of Des Moines’ most beloved restaurants move into a space that can accommodate its big personality and bigger-than-cult following, but also because we know a bit about the history of this property. In 2017, we worked with Peace Tree Brewing Co. to design the taproom and restaurant, located at a prime nexus point of Des Moines’ East Village and Market District. As Peace Tree transitions to distribution-only, we’re thrilled to see the property maintained as a space where people gather — outdoors and in — in a highly walkable and bikeable location. We’re working with Full Court Press to stay true to Fong’s tiki vibe and festive atmosphere. The new space accommodates lunch and dinner crowds during those high-traffic times, and prioritizes late-night by-the-slice pizza seekers after dark. The additional outdoor space will give Fong’s fans new places to kick back and enjoy craft cocktails and a slice of iconic crab rangoon pizza. • In the third quarter of 2024, office vacancy rates continued to rise in Des Moines and the surrounding areas. Slingshot has been at the forefront of helping office buildings boldly reimagine their existence — from floor plans to traffic flow to amenities — and thrive in a new landscape, where building tenants and office workers want different things than they did 10+ years ago. We worked with an office building on West Lakes Parkway in West Des Moines to transform an empty single tenant space into smaller unit sizes that welcome many different users. New occupants will enjoy communal amenities, such as shared meeting and conference spaces, an outdoor patio, grab and go cafe and coffee bar, and fitness center. These large-scale renovations are not without their challenges. Often they require a deep understanding of complex code and the confidence to undertake some pretty transformational changes. Luckily, those are two things the Slingshot team loves. Creative solutions to tough challenges? We’re here for that. #SlingshotArchitecture #Slingers #Slingshot #IowaArchitecture #Architecture #AIAIowa #IowaArchitect #AdaptiveReuse #Office

  • “What I love most about our spa space is how it blends original elements of our historic building with modern and minimal design,” says Hannah Krause, owner of Eden, a local apothecary in Des Moines’ East Village, that carries luxury skincare brands. “The space design was intended to feel minimal and monochromatic — meant to serve as a visual “break” and breath of fresh air for our guests.” We often feature our big projects, but our team adores smaller scale commercial updates, too. We love working with local business owners to help them achieve their goals, often getting creative and flexible within small spaces and budgets. This project is a perfect example of the impact that is possible through thoughtful design. When the store wanted to add spa services to its retail space, we worked within the existing building to find a solution that fits with the brand and its evolving needs, all while remaining true to the fresh, calm, elevated vibe that Eden is known for. We tucked treatment and relaxation rooms into the back of the current store and the basement, navigating mechanical challenges, and the result makes us breathe “ahhhhh.” “Slingshot did a beautiful job helping us achieve our design goals while honoring some historic elements like the original brick wall in the spa lounge,” Hannah says. (The spa is now open for booking if you need a little winter-season self-care.) #SlingshotArchitecture #Slingers #Slingshot #IowaArchitecture #Architecture #AIAIowa #InteriorDesign #IowaDesigner #AdaptiveReuse #TreatYourself #Valentine #EdenIowa

  • Mentorship can be inspiring and life-changing — both for the mentee and mentor. Slingshot Architect Nolan Sullivan serves as a volunteer mentor for the ACE Mentor Program of America, which connects high school students with professionals in the architecture, construction, and engineering fields. “I hope that I am able to spread my passion for architecture with students and excite them about pursuing a career in this field,” Nolan says. Students in the ACE program form teams that emulate an actual design team. Together with their mentors, students work through a mock design project. Recently, Nolan accompanied the student team on a visit to their project site. They documented existing conditions and context. Next, mentors will support the students through the design process. “By sharing our experience and expertise we can help students build the skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in an architecture, construction, or engineering field,” Nolan says. More than 12,000 students have been mentored by 5,000 mentors through ACE, with $37 million in scholarships awarded to students entering the field. Thanks to Nolan and all ACE mentors for inspiring the next generation of professionals and creative visionaries! Whether it’s reimagining public spaces or designing sustainable cities, these students are the future of how we live, work, and play. #SlingshotArchitecture #Slingers #Slingshot #IowaArchitecture #Architecture #AIAIowa #IowaArchitect #AceMentor

  • Slingshot is proud to serve as a collaborator in the creation and launch of new Strategic Investment Districts in the Greater Iowa City, Inc. area. This is a significant milestone in the region’s journey toward sustainable, community-centered growth. Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty are the selected cities for this initiative, which leverages the unique character of each city to support strong neighborhoods, attract investment, and create jobs. The initiative centers place-based economic development that highlights each community’s unique identity as a competitive advantage. This approach helps to transform underutilized areas into thriving hubs (something our team is passionate about!). Steve Miller, Director and Architect based in our Iowa City office, is leading the collaboration for Slingshot. Steve helped analyze and identify the Strategic Investment Districts in each of the three cities. “We are excited that Greater Iowa City is taking a proactive approach to urbanism and implementing initiatives to encourage good development in places that will help make our cities more walkable, equitable and sustainable,” he says. Slingshot also sponsored Greater Iowa City, Inc.’s Annual Meeting in November, when the Strategic Investment Districts were unveiled to the public and the events 450 attendees. We’re honored to work alongside such committed partners and contribute Slingshot’s experience and expertise in Bringing People Together. Learn more: https://buff.ly/3W9cS9T

  • Chocolate and coffee? Yes, please. Pantone says that Mocha Mousse 17-1230, it’s official pick for 2025 color of the year, is a “warming, brown hue imbued with richness” that “nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.” It’s the first time in more than 20 years that a shade of brown has been crowned Pantone’s annual color champion. Once again, Pantone read the room. Both in our work and right here in the office, we’re here for simple pleasures and the comforts of human connection. Check out some of the ways brands are already expressing their love for Mocha Mousse: https://buff.ly/4frr05r #SlingshotArchitecture #Slingers #Slingshot #IowaArchitecture #Architecture #AIAIowa #InteriorDesign #IowaDesigner #Pantone #ColorOfTheYear #MochaMousse
