According to a recently released report by Global Energy Monitor, the vast majority of new oil and gas extraction projects in 2024 were located in the oceans: ?? New data from their Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker reveal: ?? 85% of newly discovered resources in 2024 were in just ten coastal and deepwater fields. ?? Every major project approval last year was for offshore development. ?? Nearly three-quarters of new startup’s resources are located offshores. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e4rVRnMX

Sharing the view from space to promote conservation for people and the planet
关于我们
SkyTruth is a conservation technology nonprofit that inspires people to protect the planet by using satellite imagery, big data, and the latest technological innovations to reveal environmentally damaging actions and make their impacts visible and measurable. SkyTruth gives away all of our data and analysis for free, so that conservationists, policymakers, journalists, researchers, and activists can hold polluters accountable for harmful activities that would otherwise remain hidden from view. Over the past two decades, SkyTruth has transformed environmental protection with satellite imagery and analysis. With our partners Google and Oceana, we launched Global Fishing Watch to track vessel activity at sea, and we were the first to demonstrate that the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was vastly larger than the federal government and BP claimed. Today, with new technologies like machine learning and cloud computing, we are teaching computers to scan thousands of images available every day to automatically detect those changes around the globe. This will make it harder than ever for polluters, poachers, and extractive industries to get away with harming the planet. And it will create opportunities for governments and forward-thinking businesses to improve their environmental performance.

Excerpt from article featuring Cerulean, our AI-powered oil detection and monitoring platform, via AFP: "...Satellite imagery means large oil spills in the ocean are relatively easily detected. When a tanker crashes or a pipe bursts, scientists know where to look. But smaller pollution events can appear as nothing more than a thin streak against the smooth sea surface -- the maritime equivalent of a needle in a haystack. 'It used to take human analysts weeks if not months to be able to detect a single (small-scale) oil pollution incident,' explained Mitchelle De Leon of US-based NGO SkyTruth. The group harnesses machine learning to comb through large datasets of satellite imagery and find spills that might previously have gone undetected." Try Cerulean for yourself: cerulean.skytruth.org

"Travelling to Grimsby, it was hard to know what to expect. When I arrived at the docks there was an eerie quiet. Media crews were lined up on the pavements..." Our campaign lead, Naomi Tilley, recounts what happened when she travelled to the UK coastal town, following the tragic #NorthSea oil tanker collision on Monday. Read: https://lnkd.in/eHzJ9z6T

On Monday, March 10 several news outlets began to report on a collision that occurred in the North Sea, off the eastern shore of East Yorkshire in the U.K.: https://lnkd.in/eppG9Gci As more information became available, it was revealed that the MV Solong, a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, collided with the MV Stena Immaculate, a U.S. flagged tanker anchored off the Humber Estuary carrying jet fuel for the U.S. military. According to available Automatic Identification System (AIS) broadcasts, the Solong traveled in a straight line at average speed with no signs of stopping or redirecting before colliding with the Stena Immaculate. Officials do not suspect foul play; rather, some suggest the crash was likely due to failure to maintain proper lookout via radar, as per MARPOL standards. The area in which the collision occurred overlaps two protected areas: the Southern North Sea MPA and the Holderness Offshore Marine Conservation Zone, and is near the Greater Wash Special Protected Area (see image below). From SkyTruth CEO John Amos: “Satellite images of the Stena Immaculate taken on March 11 do not appear to show any signs of an oil slick, with the caveat that very high winds (~40km/hr) would cause any slick to break up / dissipate quickly, and create a high sea state that would make it difficult to see the slick via satellite imagery. However, if the Solong sinks, there is risk of a fuel oil spill with potentially more serious environmental consequences for marine life that would likely require remediation.” According to local officials, it is unlikely that either ship will sink, but risk remains until both vessels are safely brought to port. As of 8:35 am UTC (4:35 EST) on Thursday March 13th there were no visible signs of oil pollution on Planet SkySat high-resolution imagery: https://lnkd.in/e6EweV_e Our team will continue to monitor the area and share any relevant updates regarding oil slicks, if any, in the area. Now available: View AIS Off Events in Cerulean ?? When you’re inspecting a vessel to see if it’s the likely source of an oil slick in Cerulean, you can now also see whether that vessel has a history of not broadcasting its GPS location for concerningly long periods of time (12+ hours, plus other criteria). For larger vessels like tankers and cargo ships on international voyages, this is?against International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations?as they are required to always broadcast their AIS data (with some security-related exceptions), and could point to an eyebrow-raising pattern of activity worth further investigation ?? Shoutout to Global Fishing Watch for their API that makes this new product feature possible! Start your investigation today: cerulean.skytruth.org #Cerulean #AIS #DarkVessels #Tracking #Maritime #IMO #EnvironmentalInvestigation #ChronicOilPollution #EnvironmentalMonitoring
