Panama’s recent illegal fishing bust shows the power of collaboration. We’re proud to support these efforts through the Joint Analytical Cell (JAC), working alongside Trygg Mat Tracking, Global Fishing Watch, C4ADS, and the IMCS Network to provide actionable intelligence and build enforcement capacity. On the ground, partners like WildAid play a vital role in strengthening regional support. Together, we’re helping turn actionable insights into impact. More via Mongabay

As a proud member of the Joint Analytical Cell (JAC), it is really a pleasure working hand-in-hand with our friends at Global Fishing Watch--they do incredible work for our ocean. Just take a look at their impact report, and you'll see why. Illegal fishing puts immense pressure on under-resourced nations. That's why we've joined forces with Trygg Mat Tracking, IMCS Network, C4ADS, and Global Fishing Watch to equip these countries with the fisheries intelligence and AI-powered insights they need to protect their seas.
?? Over the past year, Global Fishing Watch has made bold strides in advancing transparency as the cornerstone of equitable ocean governance. We’ve sharpened our open-source tools, deepened global partnerships with governments and wider stakeholders, and delivered innovative research that is reshaping the conversation on effective ocean management. Above all, we saw a significant surge in the use of our advanced ocean monitoring and analysis tools. Among the sweeping list of achievements that color our 2024 Annual Report, we recorded: ?? 11 million gigabytes of satellite imagery analyzed ?? Nearly 900,000 vessels tracked on the organization’s flagship map ?? 11,000 new registered map users — a 50% increase from 2023 ?? Nearly 1,500 research citations ?? See what else we accomplished together last year! bit.ly/3FK1w6Q

Training in action to protect the sea. CORALINA is strengthening marine surveillance in the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve with support from Skylight and key authorities. By combining real-time AI insights, satellite monitoring, and boots on deck, teams are improving how they detect suspicious activity and respond to illegal fishing. Recent training—led?by CORALINA and including Armada Nacional de Colombia, Dirección General Marítima, and others—ensures those on the frontlines have the tools they need. When partners are equipped, knowledge spreads, scaling impact across frontline teams. Next up: engaging local fishers and the community in this shared mission.

Caught in the Act: Illegal Fishing in Argentina’s Waters. We love these stories of impact.?Prefectura NAVAL?took swift action against Xinrun 579, a vessel engaged in illegal fishing within the country's protected waters. With the help of Skylight's AI-powered insights, officials were alerted to the vessel’s suspicious movements in real-time. First, a Speed Range Event signaled anomalous behavior, followed by a Fishing Event alert leading to further suspicious activity. Armed with this intelligence, enforcement officials responded immediately with penalties to follow. ??? "Skylight was vital to identify this vessel immediately; we were lucky enough to have our Coast Guard nearby, and the intervention was a success," said the lead of the GIS Division. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing threatens marine ecosystems, economies, and food security worldwide—but real-time intelligence is changing the game. Watch to see video of?Prefectura NAVAL?in action! Great work!

Historic IUU arrest! In Panama’s largest-ever operation against illegal fishing in a marine protected area (MPA), 16 vessels were detected in the Cordillera de Coiba Marine Protected Area, a vital part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). Six vessels were seized, fully loaded with thousands of pounds of yellowfin tuna. Great job?MiAMBIENTE, ARAP, SENAN! Through the Joint Analytical Cell (JAC) support and using Skylight’s smart satellite insight capabilities powered through Maxar Technologies, Panamanian authorities were able to use high-resolution satellite imagery as seen in the picture here to track and stop these illegal activities—even vessels that attempted to evade detection by turning off their monitoring systems. We're honored to support Panama in its efforts to safeguard its precious natural resources, including Coiba Ridge, one of the most special places on our planet.
