So proud to (finally) reveal the startups we launched from Berkeley LSEC's Venture Grant Program this year. This is the program where we find great biotech ideas in academic labs, give them a $100k grant, invest up to $200k in a newco via the SkyDeck Fund, put them through their paces with some of the best entrepreneurship programming on campus, and boom, we've got a new biotech startup. ?? ?? ?? Drumroll please, the LSEC Venture Grant Awardees for 2024 are: ?? ASO Therapeutics. Founded by Anders Naar, UC Berkeley Professor and Vice Chair of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology, and biotech industry veteran Stuart Hwang, ASO Therapeutics is a precision RNA medicine R&D company targeting cancers with high unmet medical needs. ?? MuscleMatrix. Founded by #Kevin_Healy, UC Berkeley Professor of Bioengineering and UVA Professor George Christ, with their graduate students. MuscleMatrix has developed a hyaluronic acid (HyA) hydrogel structural scaffold for volumetric muscle loss injury repair. Watch this space to see where these brand-new companies go! Last night it was wonderful to be able to witness just how truly vast the UC alumni network is in Japan at a UC-wide event with UC President Michael Drake. Did you know there are 6,000 living UC alumni in Japan? 2k of them are University of California, Berkeley alums! I'm here with Berkeley SkyDeck this week to run the SkyDeck JETRO - Japan External Trade Organization Startup Bootcamp. The level of innovation coming out of Japan has been growing steadily with the commitment of the Japanese government to staying at the forefront of tech. Thank you Noriya Tarutani, Kohei Okui, Yotetsu Hayashi, and Will F. Ferguson for the ongoing partnership with JETRO.
