I’ll never forget getting schooled by opposing counsel on the rules on non-steno depositions. It was 2009, and I was a young litigator at Winstead PC in Austin, convinced I had everything under control. I’d thoroughly prepared for defending this deposition and expected it to start like every other depo -- with a court reporter, a videographer, the usual setup. So, when the plaintiff’s attorney walked in with just a video camera on a tripod and his paralegal (a notary) ready to swear in the witness, I was perplexed. I immediately objected. Surely, this wasn’t allowed? There had to be rules. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be done. But to my surprise, opposing counsel calmly looked at me and said, "Actually, it’s perfectly legal." He then proceeded to explain the rules on non-stenographic depositions that I hadn’t considered. I swallowed my pride and realized I had a lot to learn. For the next two days, we took deposition after deposition—no court reporter, no stenographer, just OC's video camera on a tripod and his paralegal. I left that experience humbled, but intrigued. It planted a seed in my mind: What if there was another, more efficient way to take depositions? What if we didn’t always need a traditional court reporting setup? At the time, it seemed unconventional, maybe even risky. But that moment was pivotal. Fast forward to today, and I'm managing partner of Doyle & Seelbach PLLC and one of founders of Skribe.ai - a company that’s rethinking the very process I once questioned. Skribe provides non-stenographic depositions, leveraging technology to simplify and speed up the process, saving attorneys time and money. What once seemed like an anomaly in that deposition years ago has now become the future. And here’s the kicker: We’re so confident in the admissibility of Skribe's non-stenographic approach that Skribe stands behind it with Skribe’s Admissibility Assurance: https://buff.ly/4ezsf2y If a judge ever rejects a Skribe record, the team will make it right—at no cost to you. The lesson I learned back in 2009 was simple: just because something has always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the best way or the only way. Change is inevitable, and often, it’s for the better. If you’re ready to see how Skribe can change the way you take depositions, let’s chat. The future of depositions is here—and it's better than ever. #depositions #Litigation #LegalTech #personalinjury #lawfirm #steno #nonsteno #testimony #legal

Stipulations are an invaluable tool for litigation, allowing both sides to agree on common practices for depositions. Whether it's conducting them remotely via Zoom, or opting for a non-stenographic method, stipulations offer flexibility—especially in states where rules haven't yet caught up with legal tech advancements. By helping expedite activities, stipulations let litigators focus on the core of their case faster, which is why courts encourage their use. We've worked with litigators to craft stipulations allowing non-stenographic depositions in key jurisdictions, including California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, and Oklahoma, and we can help you, too.
