Skills for the European #OpenScience commons: creating a training ecosystem for Open and #FAIR science

关于我们

The project set up a pan-European network of competence centres to speed up the training of European researchers and harmonise the training of new professional figures for scientific data management.? The European project Skills4EOSC (Skills for the European Open Science commons: creating a training ecosystem for Open and FAIR science), is coordinated by GARR and it is funded under the Horizon Europe framework programme.? Over the next three years, it will work to provide Open Science Commons and create an EOSC-ready skilled European workforce, connecting existing centres of competence in open science and scientific data management. The aim is to develop methodologies, activities and training resources to unify the current training landscape into a collaborative and reliable ecosystem and to provide dedicated community-specific support to leverage the potential of EOSC for open and data-intensive research. The project consortium brings together 44 partners, representing the most relevant experiences of national, regional, institutional and thematic competence centres for open science and scientific data management in 18 European countries (Italy, the Netherlands, France, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Estonia, and Spain).?

Skills4EOSC at the Orbit Workshop and Winter School in Sofia. On February 4-5, 2025, Sara Di Giorgio and Eva Méndez of Skills4EOSC took part in key initiatives organised by the ORBIT Project in Sofia, Bulgaria, to strengthen Open Science skills and practices among researchers at different career stages. Their participation also focused on raising awareness of the importance of training for developing new competencies essential to making Open Science a reality and presenting the work carried out by Skills4EOSC in this field. Workshop for Experienced Researchers – Open Science and FAIR Data The event started on the morning of February 4 with a Workshop for Experienced Researchers at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski Mirror Hall. Sara Di Giorgio opened with a talk on "Open Science Introduction and Skills Landscape," presenting the Skills4EOSC main outcomes and outlining that Skills4EOSC represents a valuable opportunity by providing operational support for building up a competence centre and training master trainers in Bulgaria.? Eva Méndez contributed with a "FAIR Data and FAIR by Design" session emphasising the importance of data findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR principles). The workshop also featured contributions from Milena Dobreva, Peter Stanchev (Kettering University, USA). On the afternoon of February 4, the Winter School 2025 officially began at the Bankya Palace Hotel, bringing together 14? PhD students and early-career researchers for a three-day immersive program on Open Science. Sara Di Giorgio delivered an extended session on "Open Science Introduction and Skills Landscape," introducing participants to the foundational concepts and policies shaping Open Science in Europe. Following her presentation, attendees engaged in a hands-on activity, analysing the Data Steward Minimum Viable Skillset elaborated by Skills4EOSC. On February 5, Eva Méndez led an in-depth session on FAIR data, where participants explored practical applications of FAIR principles and how to integrate them into their research workflows. The day's agenda also included interactive sessions on: Skills for PhD students (Milena Dobreva), Open Access publishing (Peter Stanchev), Citizen Science (Teodora Gandova). The Winter School continued until February 7, covering topics such as AI tools in Open Science, legal frameworks for secondary publications, science communication, and individual skills assessment. The Winter School 2025 was organised as part of the ORBIT project – Open Research Bulgarian Incubator project, funded by a cascading grant of REINFORCING Project supported by the Horizon Europe program. This initiative aims to develop Open Science capacities in Bulgaria by providing researchers with high-quality training and mentorship opportunities.

Helping teams utilize AI and data | PhD candidate in Machine Learning

I'm happy to share that last week I took part in the doctoral school on Open and Responsible Research and Innovation by the ORBIT project. We talked about open-access publishing, the technical and legal aspects of creating, curating, and publishing open #datasets and data papers, training and using #LLMs and AI in research and education, including citizens in the scientific process, and many more thought-provoking topics. Some open and responsible research from me and my team is coming soon.

The Skills4EOSC workshop will focus on upskilling FAIR and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The Skills4EOSC project has developed a FAIR-by-Design methodology for learning materials aiming to ensure high-quality reusable training from both learners' and trainers’ perspectives. This methodology can be easily adapted for designing FAIR digital objects in general, including data and research software.? The workshop aims to equip participants with essential skills for effectively training Open Science topics. Through interactive sessions, participants will gain practical knowledge on applying Minimum Viable Skillsets, creating FAIR-by-design learning materials, and utilising a recognition framework for Open Science competencies. In addition, the workshop will highlight existing Skills4EOSC learning resources and include hands-on activities to reinforce key concepts. Target Audience Researchers, educators, and policymakers involved in open science initiatives, as well as anyone interested in developing skills and educational resources that align with FAIR principles. This week is a celebration for the ORBIT project - with an inspiring winter school with dedicated and active #PhD students, generous sharing from Eva Méndez, Sara Di Giorgio, Milena Dobreva, Peter Stanchev, Plamen Miltenoff, Ana Lazarova, Albena Antonova, Petar Teodosiev, Dimitar Iliev, Teodora Gandova, and also plenty of support and inspiration from Ana Proykova, Milena Damyanova, Yanita Zherkova and Mikaela Stancheva. We also had our first vibrant workshop for experienced researchers and shared our first report (executive summary in English available at https://lnkd.in/dics9VAt). Tomorrow, we will close the school with the launch of our?#selfassessment?#tool?for researchers. More details will follow! (the photo captured a moment from one of our activities, reinforcing the importance of connections and support among peers). Many thanks to REINFORCING Project for sharing their insights and supporting our activities! Our school is special as all participants will pick an #ORRI component to weave into their research, and we will have a chance to hear how they worked in real life at our final conference in June!
