A skilled career can be a fulfilling career choice for those who work hard and become masters of their craft. Providing lifelong, stable high-income careers with the potential to be your own boss and even grow your own multi-million-dollar business. As The Wall Street Journal writer Te-Ping Chen points out in her recent story – America’s New Millionaire Class – private equity firms are taking notice, investing millions in businesses within home-service sectors like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. As Chen notes in her article, “The trades have long offered solid hourly wages for workers without college degrees. They are also springboards for those with bigger entrepreneurial ambitions.” We couldn’t agree more! Skilled careers can be lucrative and provide virtually limitless opportunities. The Skilled Careers Coalition endeavors to bring a diverse set of stakeholders together from businesses and industry, to educators, to parents and youth. 43% of students surveyed would consider a skilled career if they had more information; parents, counselors cite lack of knowledge to help guide them. The Skilled Careers Coalition commissioned the Skilled Trade Insight Research Study to better understand why skilled careers are not being pursued by more students. Our research found that the leading obstacle preventing more students from pursuing a skilled career is not a lack of interest, but a lack of information. Students, counselors and parents surveyed shared their perceptions on skilled careers versus college and military career paths as part of the SCC study. We found that financial security is the top motivator for students when choosing a career path, with 76% agreeing that a skilled career can lead to owning a business and entrepreneurial success. Students surveyed were also drawn to other key aspects of a skilled career including job stability, less debt, high quality of life, and high-income potential. And yet, the SCC study found that only 15% of students surveyed were considering a technical or vocational school or apprenticeship post high school. The skilled trades gap exists and it is growing. Demand for skilled talent is outstripping the supply of this talent. It's time to have a conversation about skilled careers. There is a third, equally viable and rewarding career path for those entering or those already in the workforce. We must de-stigmatize the perceptions of "blue collar" jobs and recognize that this talented, skilled workforce represents the backbone of the U.S. economy (and our security).
