To expose cancer research trainees to community outreach and engagement (COE), the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center's Office of COE and Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) developed a program offering trainees the opportunity to develop, implement, and evaluate a novel community outreach initiative. "This manuscript details the first cohort of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center's unique program providing cancer research trainees an opportunity to lead a community outreach initiative from start to finish. This program allowed the center to expand impact by producing four novel community-based initiatives and allowed participating trainees an opportunity to understand the importance of including the community voice in research," said first author Rebecca Melillo, MS, Program Manager for COE at the cancer center. We're proud to announce that Jefferson Health's Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute has been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review on its 2024 list of 100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs. The NCI-designated Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center is a leader in clinical research, boasting over 140 active trials, including groundbreaking CAR T therapies, and is home to the largest phase I research program in the Philadelphia area. A partnership with Drexel University enhances our research impact, and our community outreach includes a mobile screening van that has brought cancer screening to more than 3,600 patients across Greater Philadelphia. The Lehigh Valley Health Network is now part of Jefferson Health. Its Topper Cancer Institute saw a significant number of new cancer cases in 2022, providing comprehensive care across eight locations in Pennsylvania. The institute is at the forefront of innovation, launching a lung cancer screening study using AI-assisted radiology and a phase 2 vaccine trial for melanoma, as well as establishing the region's first stem cell transplant program. We are proud to be recognized for our commitment to providing exceptional cancer care and advancing the field of oncology! https://lnkd.in/gcYSuXxp

Just a few months ago, we opened our new Medical Oncology suite in Cherry Hill. Updated guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) on the use of cannabis and cannabinoids in adults with cancer stress that it is important for oncologists to have a conversation about cannabis. However, studies suggest that cancer patients often use cannabis to manage symptoms without speaking to their oncologist first, and oncologists may be hesitant to broach the topic with their patients. Brooke Worster, MD, FACP, Enterprise Director of Supportive Oncology at the cancer center, spoke to Medscape about how oncologists can discuss the topic with their patients. https://lnkd.in/eqAb8iUs
