Devanne Pena, RA, NCARB and I had the opportunity to represent SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc. and attended the Leads Exchange Group’s Social Hour Networking Event on Wednesday March 19.?It was a great event that was hosted by Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont Construction Skills Training Center in Charlotte, NC. The event featured networking time, tour of the facility, and a panel discussion on shortages of skilled trades in the construction industry and what the folks at Goodwill Construction Skills Training Center and She Built This City are doing to try and fill in those gaps.? We all know skilled labor is in short supply right now and I regret to say that I was not aware of these programs prior to this event, but I left there very impressed by what they are doing in the industry. Both provide great opportunities for Construction professionals to fill gaps in their skilled trade personnel, and I would encourage you to check them out when recruiting new talent. Currently the Goodwill Construction Skills Training Center provides classes for electricians, HVAC service technicians, and carpenters. They have also provided classes on drone pilot operations in the past. Thanks to conference organizers Michael J. Shumsky, PE and Michael Ali, PE, and everyone that attended our talks on existing building safety and sustainability at the North Carolina Department of Administration State Construction Conference earlier this month. Our exchange was very thought provoking. Kenzie Oakes, P.E. and I had a wonderful evening representing SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc. at NC State’s WISE program (Women In Sciences and Engineering) speaker series. It was a pleasure to speak with these ladies about some of our favorite projects as well as the building design process in general. A special thanks to WISE director Katherine Titus-Becker for setting the meeting up. As NC State WISE Alumni, Kenzie and I were honored to give back a small portion to the program that meant so much to us in our early college years. As always GoPack!
