“The World Needs More Female Engineers” Last week, we took a break from the Friday deadline crunch to host a group of female high school students from Nepal. The visit was well-organized by two of our summer interns, Z and Josie. Katereh (the K in SK) shared her story of how the company started before the group split up to learn the basics of what we design as civil engineers. The brightness and curiosity of the girls was inspiring to all of us! These girls were competitively selected as some of the brightest in their country through the On-Demand Youth Leadership Program (ODYLP): Nepal – STEM. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) sponsors this initiative to bring sixteen young participants (ages 15-18) and two adult mentors from the country of Nepal for a three-week U.S.-based exchange focused on promoting female youth engagement in STEM and youth leadership.?

We had the privilege of working on some exciting updates around the iconic Campanile at The University of Kansas - a powerful memorial dedicated to alumni, faculty, staff, and students who lost their lives in WWII. This project improves the surrounding landscape by adding a new seat wall with plaques from previously donated benches, bringing in native plants for year-round beauty, and updating walkways for better accessibility around this historic bell tower. The Campanile is a symbol of KU’s rich tradition - graduates celebrate by walking through, and legend has it, passing through before graduation is bad luck! Focal Design Studio is honored to receive a Merit Award for the Prairie Cabins at the 2024 AIA Kansas City Design Excellence Awards. Situated adjacent to a spring-fed stream, the cabins are located to minimally disturb existing trees and maximize guest solitude. Placed perpendicular to the topography of the stream and riparian zone meandering throughout the surrounding rural landscape, the buildings are simple and direct in form; recalling vernacular farmhouses of Northwest Missouri. Maple Hills Park in Overland Park, Kansas has won a Citation Award from AIA Kansas City for their annual Design Excellence Awards competition. The project, centered on energy conservation, visitor well-being, and equitable community development, revitalized the park with a new mass-timber park shelter and restroom building. These upgrades create a supportive, accessible, and connected environment by reinforcing Overland Park’s strong sense of community. The shelter’s use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels demonstrates how effective they can be for public park projects. CLT is a renewable resource that sequesters carbon. The panels are prefabricated, speeding up construction and reducing on-site waste and disruption, are durable and resilient, and bring a natural warmth and visual appeal that compliments the park’s outdoor setting while redefining its architectural character. Combined with a rooftop solar array that provides most of the park’s electrical needs, Maple Hill Park’s new structures create sustainable, inclusive, and transformational public spaces for the community for years to come. https://lnkd.in/gEzfCMwG Congratulations to the project team: SK Design Group, Inc. Last Friday, we officially broke ground on our Kansas City Banking Center in the heart of the Crossroads District! This expansion gives us the opportunity to strengthen our connections with businesses and residents across the neighborhood and the greater metro area. Kansas City is a key market for us, and our new office reflects our long-term commitment to this vibrant community. We're excited to be part of the Crossroads Arts District, investing not only in a space to conduct business but also in fostering local growth, innovation, and of course art. Once completed, the building will showcase selections from the Art of Emprise—the world’s largest collection of Kansas-related art. This is our way of celebrating both our Kansas roots and the creative energy of this dynamic neighborhood.
