Calling All Spartans! March is Women’s History Month, and time to honor the trailblazing women who have shaped us. At San José State University, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women throughout history—those who have challenged barriers and fought for justice. Meet Kate Kennedy, a proud member of the first graduating class of San José Normal School (now SJSU). An Irish immigrant, Kennedy was a fearless advocate for equal pay, leading to California’s 1874 law requiring public school teachers—women and men alike—receive equal compensation. Her fight for fairness didn’t stop there. In 1890, she won California teachers the right to protection from arbitrary dismissal, ensuring job security for educators across the state. A true pioneer, Kennedy was also the first woman to run for state office and the first teacher in San Francisco to join a union, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to justice and equality. This image is from the Bay Area Suffragists collection, which celebrates just a few of the many momentous events in the history of women. A Day to Remember: Reflecting on SJSU’s History and the Path Forward On February 19, we marked a significant moment at San José State University—a day to look back, face the uncomfortable truths of our past and renew our dedication to justice and equality. In 1942, SJSU played a direct role in the incarceration of Japanese Americans, including members of our own campus community. This chapter in our history is a painful reminder of the harm that can be done when fear and prejudice take hold. We cannot rewrite history, but we can choose how we remember. Acknowledging this painful history is a step toward healing—both for those who lived through it and for us, as we commit to ensuring such violations of human dignity never happen again. #DayOfRemembrance #SJSU #Justice #Equality #Truth #NeverAgain
