PLEASE SHARE. Help us provide a bit of a rebuttal to a “what you should donate to a food bank” post that is well meaning, but not helpful. It has been floating around since at least 2015. The post starts like this: "Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter, which is hard to get from regular food banks." You might have seen it, and potentially shared it. Help your local food bank this holiday season and share this post too. ***What to donate to your local food bank for the Holidays*** MONEY. Donate cash to the organization you selected. Let the food bank buy what they need at their volume discount. I promise your investment will go further. Let them buy gas for their delivery truck or cover the insurance bill. Let them pay for the repair bill on their freezer or get their pallet jack fixed. Donating food in small quantities means that the food bank needs to assess, sort and box up what you add to the food drive bin. All of that takes time, people and space. And they may end up with way too many canned peas and not enough peanut butter. If you donate fresh food/ frozen food – it may need to be disposed of by the food bank because they cannot prove that it was always stored safely. That breaks everyone’s heart. If a straight donation of cash worries you, host a virtual food drive, where the money you collect is ear marked for food purchases. Cash is much easier to store for a rainy day than cans of peas. Bonus for you – the donation is tax deductible. Keep the receipt! After more than 20 years working with food banks, we feel obliged to gently shout this from the rooftops. Especially now, when need is high everywhere and donations are down.

Experienced technology and process coaching for inventory intensive non-profits.
关于我们
SJ Consulting provides consulting services for Food Banks, Food Pantries and other inventory intensive non-profits. We have experience in all aspects of operations—from food sourcing to distribution to financial statements. We have deep experience with the technologies that are commonly used to support this work. We have been working with Food Banks for more than 15 years and have helped more than 120 organizations with various technology and process improvement projects. We have learned from these engagements that the most successful results come from addressing both technology and the organization's "people" systems. Our passion is coaching organizations to obtain the results they expect from such initiatives; this occurs from an alignment of people, processes and technology.

February 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of my introduction to food banking. It has been an honor to be engaged with such worthy organizations for the majority of my work life. So much has changed over the years, and many who were involved in the industry at the beginning are retiring or have retired. I'd like to capture and share some of the stories here on LinkedIn to document snippets of the incredible evolution. I plan to tap some of my food banking friends for some of their favorite stories, both technology related and otherwise. I will also share some of my own. Follow our business page SJ Consulting, Inc. or watch this space. If you have requests, share in the comments!
