We are an unconventional design practice that uses architecture, research and fabrication for creative and social impact
关于我们
SITU was founded in 2005, in Brooklyn, New York, by four friends studying architecture at the Cooper Union. We’ve shaped our practice out of the multi-disciplinary style of our education, and have grown through clients who value a progressive approach to problem-solving. Our process is client-specific, adaptive and driven by a diversity of deep knowledge, untethered from any stylistic or formal agenda. This allows us to work out of bounds, using new tools of architecture to generate unique outcomes. Our practice is composed of three divisions—Studio, Research and Fabrication—that work collaboratively while providing individual services. This keeps prototyping, research and development and hands-on craft elemental to our creative process. Our space is split between creative studio and workshop. This enables a unique sort of radical pragmatism—experimenting with new material possibilities as they’re imagined. Our staff is made up of a wide range of specialists across disciplines: architecture, art, design, engineering, fabrication, geography, programming, urbanism, visualization, research and development—all dedicated to exploring and crafting spaces at multiple scales. Our clients and collaborators come from an equally varied collection of sectors: museums, art centers and academic institutions; civic, social and professional organizations; developers, high-end commercial companies and residential clientele. SITU has received numerous awards and honors including grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Oak Foundation, Interior Design Best of Year in 2014 and 2011 and an award for Excellence in Design by the Art Commission of the City of New York.

New York Magazine wrote a great article last week highlighting NYC's new Dining Out program. "The city recruited two architecture firms, SITU Studio and WXY, to develop prototypes and come up with design principles, and the results are elegant and pragmatic: Streeteries that occupy parking spaces must now be?sturdy, lightweight, and modular, protected by water-filled barriers (no more sand or earth ballast). Floors must be laid down in sections so that they can be quickly taken up and the creatures dwelling beneath them can be evicted. Roofs must be the kind that flap. Most important, the whole apparatus gets dismantled and stored after Thanksgiving, to reappear in April — ending arctic dinners under erratic heat lamps that many romanticize but few still choose. The administration’s outdoor-dining website has links to designers, suppliers, and storage companies that can smooth the process." Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dHjKYmCu

We enjoyed working alongside this great team to fabricate and engineer eight custom gutter & downspout assemblies for the Redmond Technology Station Pedestrian Bridge. The assemblies were composed of rolled, bent and welded stainless steel parts coated with a robust industrial paint. One complete assembly was mocked up in our shop to test-fit parts and aesthetics.
As an aesthetically stunning neighborhood landmark, the Redmond Technology Station Pedestrian Bridge has quickly become a vibrant public space that safely and sustainably improves accessibility for thousands of Washington State residents and commuters daily. Yesterday, the International Criminal Court convicted Mr. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Timbuktu, Mali, during 2012 and 2013. During this period, Timbuktu was occupied by Jihadist groups and Mr. Al Hassan served as the de facto chief of the Islamic police. Produced by SITU Research for the Al Hassan case at the request of the Office of the Prosecutor, we developed a platform featuring a 3D model of the built environment of Timbuktu. Effectively a ‘digital twin’ of the city, it hosted a diverse array of both open-source and closed-source evidence such as videos, photos, 3D data, satellite imagery and more. This case, “The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud” marks the first time a defendant has been prosecuted and convicted for religious persecution. It is also the first use of an advanced digital platform at an ICC trial, setting a precedent for integrating new technologies and digital evidence in the courtroom.

We are excited to announce that the renovation and expansion of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff Conservancy Visitor Center is moving forward, with expected completion in 2026, when Graycliff will also celebrate its 100th anniversary. Our design for the new Visitor Center seeks to augment the original Wright and Shipman vision with a contemporary approach guided by programmatic flexibility and environmental sustainability. The highly adaptable architecture is deeply integrated into the landscape in order to stimulate opportunities for indoor and outdoor programming. We are confident that the Visitor Center will continue to allow for Graycliff to be a vibrant cultural destination in the region for decades to come. The larger project includes the restoration of Graycliff’s gardens and grounds, alongside the construction of a new visitor center designed by SITU. This center will offer immersive exhibits and educational programming about the estate's history and Wright's architecture.
