Yesterday, I had the privilege of assisting Philippe Villeneuve, Chief Architect for Historic Monuments in France, as his translator during A Conversation on Rebuilding Notre-Dame at the at the Legion of Honor, San Francisco Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Organized by the World Monuments Fund in partnership with Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education, the event focused on the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris following the 2019 fire. It was a pleasure to engage in discussions on the value of historicity and the meaning of preservation—topics that strongly resonate with my work on adapting San Francisco’s Embarcadero to sea level rise, particularly in preserving the historic piers and bulkhead buildings from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. Grateful for the opportunity to take part in this exchange and looking forward to continuing the conversation! And of course, a special mention to our favorite word of the day: arc-boutant—or, as we say in English, flying buttress. Because every great structure (and conversation) needs a little extra support! Thank you Sabine de Maussion Arida for this opportunity.
