Last week while I was attending the National Rural Economic Developers Association Annual Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska history was being made back in Kentucky. On Friday, representatives from Shelbyville and Shelby County, Kentucky including Shelby County Judge Executive Dan Ison along with Shelbyville Mayor Troy Ethington gathered with leadership from Canadian Solar Inc. and e-STORAGE to announce alongside Governor Andy Beshear the largest economic development project in Shelby County's history. The $712 million Shelbyville Battery Manufacturing project will establish a state-of-the-art, 6-gigawatt hour battery cell, module and packaging facility in a 1 million-square-foot building located right off of Interstate 64. The plant will produce batteries used by utilities and other customers to store energy at large scale. The batteries are about 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and nearly 9 feet tall that are paired with solar, wind or other forms of electricity generation. These BESS batteries are seen as playing a crucial role for both a green energy future and a secure power grid as demand for electricity continues to grow in the U.S. The project will create 1,572 jobs within the next 24 months.
