Fifty-one years ago, Roe v. Wade affirmed the right to abortion—a victory that changed the landscape of reproductive rights. But for Black women, Roe was the floor, not the ceiling. Despite the rights Roe safeguarded, many Black and brown women were denied access to the reproductive care we deserved due to reproductive care deserts or economic barriers to care.? The dismantling of #Roe exacerbated existing barriers to care and opened the door for 26 states to restrict or even criminalize abortion care. We know we need to restore the right to abortion, but what we need to build back must go further than #Roe to ensure everyone can make decisions for themselves, free from barriers and oppression. Ironically, some of those in power who celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy would have opposed his acts of resistance. Despite some revisionist and whitewashed history, we know the truth. Dr. King was a fierce advocate for justice and stood firmly in the face of white supremacy. He understood how systems of oppression serve each other, whether the military-industrial complex, segregation or capitalism. Dr. King’s ability to foster community and collective action laid the foundation to shift policies and culture. Today, Reproductive Justice as a movement is rooted in recognizing the interconnectedness of our lives and that our fight for liberation depends on each other. As we continue to fight against white supremacy in all of its forms, we must hold close to the lessons of our ancestors, such as Dr. King. #MLKDay #ReproductiveJustice #TrustBlackWomen

I am sure we are all aware of the tragic deaths of Amber Thurman and Candi Miller in GA that were reported to be preventable and directly linked to the 6-week abortion ban we have been fighting.? ? Today, SisterSong is activating our Trust Black Women partners and creating an opportunity for Black women leaders, organizers, and Black-led orgs to join the Reproductive Justice movement to demand accountability for the Black women who lost their lives so senselessly.? ? We are holding a Trust Black Women Mass Mobilization call today Thursday, September 19th at 3:00 pm EST.?We are also planning an action to take place on Sept. 28th in Atlanta. Our GA State Coordinator, Danielle, is taking point on this and will have more information on how to get plugged in on the call.
