?? Indigenous Peoples in Ecuador continue to be impacted by the expansion of Canadian mining projects on their territories, where they have been threatened at gunpoint, criminalized, injured from bullets and tear gas canisters, and murdered. Their communities have also been turned into war zones by police and military forces. The new trade deal between Canada and Ecuador is endangering Indigenous Peoples' lives and causing severe environmental destruction. ???Check out the story from Brandi Morin (Cree/Iroquois), with photography from Ian Willms, via Cultural Survival. This is part 3 of 4 in a series. #IndigenousRights

Lead The Charge's third annual Auto Supply Chain Leaderboard reveals how automakers ranked in efforts to eliminate emissions, environmental harm, and human rights violations from their supply chains.??? Among the survey of 18 global automakers, the average score for Indigenous Peoples’ rights is 6%, two points higher from 2024. This is compared to 25% for human rights generally, an area diminished by “particularly poor performance on Indigenous Peoples’ rights and workers’ rights, and the failure by all companies to provide information and evidence of actual implementation across the board.” Despite some improvement toward Indigenous Peoples’ rights readiness from a handful of automakers, the automotive industry has a long way to go. SIRGE Coalition will continue to engage automakers and work with Lead the Charge and others to raise the industry from its 6% on Indigenous Peoples’ rights. The best way forward: an industry-wide shift to respect Indigenous Peoples and their right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). ?? ?? Indigenous Nations are organizing and resisting the growing assault of Canadian mining companies on their lands. For decades, corporations like Texaco (now Chevron) and PetroEcuador have devastated the region, spilling over 16 million gallons of crude oil and dumping 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into rivers, leaving behind a legacy of cancer, birth defects, and poisoned water. Now, as Canada and Ecuador finalize a new trade deal, Indigenous communities fear an even greater wave of land theft, violence, and criminalization. ?? Today is #WorldWildlifeDay! We honor and celebrate the vital role that Indigenous Peoples play in protecting wildlife and ecosystems around the world. ???? Indigenous Peoples steward most of the world's remaining biodiversity and preserve forests, waters, and grasslands that are home to many species. However, their lands and rights continue to be threatened by extractive activities, deforestation, and the climate crisis. To protect wildlife, we must protect Indigenous rights and honor their leadership in conservation efforts. ??? ?? ???The European Union takes two steps back on climate and corporate accountability with the proposed Omnibus package?that undermines important corporate sustainability policies and Indigenous Peoples' rights, slowing progress toward building clean and equitable supply chains. ?? Civil society organizations across the globe are criticizing this recent announcement. Read more from Lead The Charge. https://lnkd.in/dzP8c-8b “By eroding the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Omnibus proposal undermines critical protections for Indigenous Peoples. Our communities often reside on lands targeted for resource extraction, it is a given that 54% of Energy Transition Minerals are on or near Indigenous Peoples’ territories, yet the proposed deregulation weakens corporate accountability for abuses hidden deeper within supply chains. Without strong, enforceable standards, the promised green energy transition risks repeating old patterns of exploitation, where profits are prioritized over our rights, cultures, and well-being,” said?Galina Angarova, Executive Director of the?SIRGE Coalition. #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousRights
