With New York City as the backdrop, we wrap up #ClimateWeekNYC. The energy and passion for driving climate solutions have been nothing short of inspiring. Thanks a lot for the invitation to participate in this panel “Bridging the Sustainability Skills Gap: How to Build Your Climate Workforce” together with Efrem Bycer; Neil Yeoh; and Sonia McMillan. Here are the key takeaways to move from innovative ideas to tangible actions: Upskilling for the Green Economy ? The demand for green jobs is outpacing available talent. Companies must focus on reskilling and upskilling to bridge this gap. LinkedIn data reveals that green job growth is outpacing talent management by 2x. ? Sustainability as a Shared Responsibility. Green skills should be integrated across all teams, empowering every employee to contribute to sustainability goals. All employees should be sustainability employees. ? Collaboration for Climate Innovation. Stronger partnerships between academia, industry, and government are key to aligning efforts to train the workforce of the future. ? Sustainability as a Strategic Priority. Sustainability is now a business necessity, driving both environmental impact and competitive advantage. The road ahead is clear: accelerating climate action through collaboration, innovation, and workforce development. Let’s keep this momentum going beyond Climate Week and continue making strides toward a sustainable future! ???? This coming October, all eyes will be on Cali, the city designated to host COP16. As we approach the world’s foremost meeting dedicated to biodiversity, we are reminded of the urgent call issued at COP15. This summit underscored the critical need to balance human development with preserving our planet’s biodiversity. At the heart of this mission lies the infrastructure that shapes our cities, connects our communities, and drives our economies. Although infrastructure is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss, it can also play an instrumental role. Besides reducing environmental impacts, infrastructure can contribute to conserving, enhancing, and restoring natural ecosystems. As such, it is becoming increasingly common for different parties to adapt their agendas to integrate biodiversity and environmental conservation into their strategies. For instance, last December, Multilateral Development Banks adopted common principles to track nature-positive finance and quantify their contribution to global agreements, like the Global Biodiversity Framework. Recognizing the importance of creating more sustainable infrastructure projects, at Sinfranova we are committed to empowering individuals and organizations to become catalysts for positive change. To this end, we recently facilitated a masterclass in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy Peru to explore the relationship between infrastructure and international agreements relevant to environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation. Are the Paris 2024 Olympic Games the most sustainable in history? Undoubtedly, the organization is making great efforts to be worthy of this title. Here are some of the initiatives and measures that Paris 2024 has put in place that exemplify the city’s ambitious sustainability agenda: ? Reducing GHG emissions The organizers aim to limit emissions to around 1.75 million tonnes of CO2 for both the Olympic Games and the Paralympics. To put it in perspective, previous summer Olympics like Tokyo 2020, Rio 2016, and London 2012 have emitted an average of 3.5 million tonnes of CO2. Paris 2024 will also incorporate practices like offsetting, meaning they will invest in global environmental and social projects to compensate for emissions that can’t be cut. ?? Limiting construction of new facilities? 95% of Paris 2024 will be hosted in existing buildings or temporary infrastructure, thus considerably reducing negative impacts from construction. In this regard, the only two new permanent facilities built for the Olympics (the Olympic Village and the Aquatics Centre) have been developed using low-carbon, bio-sourced, and recycled materials—which is expedited to result in a 50% carbon footprint reduction over the building’s lifecycle compared to business-as-usual construction—and are solar-powered. By reducing the number of new construction, the Organization Committee will avoid another big problem historically faced in previous Olympic games: venues built specifically for the Olympic Games being abandoned once the games conclude. In this regard, the Olympic Village will provide 2,800 housing units post-games, while the Aquatics Centre will become a multi-sports facility open to all. ?? Enhancing public and clean transportation The sustainability strategy for Paris 2024 includes mobility, ensuring that all venues are accessible by public transportation. This includes planned extensions to the Métro, improved biking routes and lanes, buses, and other public transit. However, some transport-related sustainability challenges still exist, including the inability to control how people get to the Olympics and move around the city—around 15 million visitors are expected to visit Paris during the Olympics; including 1.9 million from outside France. It is estimated that aviation emissions for Paris 2024 could hit 837,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. These are only a few examples showing Paris 2024 plans to become the first Summer Olympic Games to be climate-positive. However, only time will tell whether Paris 2024 achieves its sustainability goals and set a precedent for future Olympic hosts.
