As I approach my one-year mark as Program Manager for SINCERUS in Somalia, working on a US Department of State-funded program in support of the Federal Government of Somalia, I’m reflecting on the incredible journey so far. Our mission to develop law enforcement capacity here has been both challenging and rewarding. This milestone also marks nearly five years in Somalia for me—time that has flown by in a whirlwind of change, progress, and valuable lessons. Since my arrival in early 2020, I’ve experienced both the highs of witnessing remarkable progress and the devastating lows of loss. The mentors and colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work with have been instrumental in shaping highly committed and resilient security forces. These individuals take on the immense responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of Mogadishu’s citizens, a job that demands courage and tenacity in the face of daily challenges. Unfortunately, the tragic events also leave deep scars. I will never forget October 29, 2022, when a double Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack claimed the lives of over 120 people and left more than 330 injured. Among the victims were friends and colleagues. I vividly remember visiting those wounded in hospital and supporting the families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
