Thankfully most of our clients are doing better than this when we first come on board... But we still bring pizza. (Kidding… Or am I?)

Being a Salesforce consultant can be tough. But it doesn't have to be (if you develop these 7 soft skills): 1) Communication Depending on the person you're working with, they’re not always technical (you can’t assume anything as a consultant). So the question is always "how can I break this down and ask them the right questions so we know which milestones we’re working towards?" And then... "How do we make incremental improvements to get to that goal?" Sometimes you may need to speak with different people within the organization in order to understand the company's overall needs. 2) Understanding what features to use What’s the right tool for the job? There are 100s of options within the platform. And many ways you can build something out. What’s the right answer? “It depends”: You have to know what’s actually possible —and the capabilities of each tool. You also need to know if a certain tool will work for your client in the long run, or if it's just a short-term fix (avoid these). 3) Customization vs Configuration You always want to start with the simplest feature available. For example: maybe instead of code you just do a 'Formula Field': Are there settings already out there that you could take advantage of instead of having to build out something custom? It's also about knowing when to choose customization over configuration. 4) Integration with other systems You need a baseline knowledge of other platforms: ? Apollo ? Hubspot ? Active campaign Most importantly, you need in-depth knowledge of how they integrate with Salesforce. 5) Keeping up with updates The Salesforce ecosystem is always evolving. They’re always looking for better ways to do things—so there will be changes. You need to constantly refresh your knowledge and understanding of features. And apply what you learn so it sticks. 6) Security and permissions For example, if you’re working with a financial services company… They can be very particular as to who is able to see private information. You need to know which employees should and shouldn't have access to it. 7) Organization Staying organized is key in this field. You need to track progress of tasks with tools like Asana or even Google Sheets. Your systems and communication with your clients should be flawless. Chaotic systems lead to client churn. Streamlined systems increase client retention. P.s. - What's one more crucial skill every Salesforce consultant needs? Thanks for reading. Enjoyed this post? I’ve spent 5000+ hours as a salesforce consultant. The #1 mistake I see people make? Naming fields vaguely. It confuses users and leads to endless data entry errors. Instead, use clear and descriptive names. Here are some examples: ? Bad: "Date" ? Good: "Contract_Start_Date__c" ? Bad: "Type" ? Good: "Account_Type__c" ? Bad: "Name" ? Good: "Product_Name__c" Your users will thank you.
